Your Opportunity:

The Knowledge Management (KM) department works to advance Alberta Health Services (AHS) capability and capacity as a learning organization that uses information, evidence and knowledge in the delivery of high quality, cost effective, patient and family-centered healthcare services. In keeping with the AHS Health & Business Plan KM develops, implements and evaluates processes, tools and user friendly technology and provides education and best practice skills training in the use of information, evidence and knowledge to support informed decision-making and action. A provincial department in the AHS System Innovations & Programs portfolio, KM is organized around four core service units: KM Practice Support & Education, KM Infrastructure, Clinical Project Support Services (CPSS), and the Knowledge Resource Service (AHS libraries). CPSS provides project management services and expertise to manage AHS clinical projects and deliver innovative solutions that address health and business needs. The Project Manager (PM) is a professional position reporting to the Director, CPSS. The PM works with a high degree of independence to manage provincial projects throughout all phases of work. The PM balances competing project constraints (scope, cost, time, resources, risks and quality) and takes a client-first approach. The PM works with business and project stakeholders to understand needs, define project scope, and align solutions with business requirements, while upholding the KM goals of evidence-based practices, quality and safety, and capacity building. Within CPSS and KM, the PM also has opportunities to contribute to operational activities that improve unit and departmental services and offerings, and support capable knowledge workers in AHS.


The PM applies project management methodology & expertise, effectively facilitates diverse groups, and skillfully engages multiple stakeholders to develop effective and efficient solutions and health services. The PM models project management rigor and shares knowledge to build organizational understanding and appreciation of project management. The PM oversees development (and where appropriate writes) & maintains core project management deliverables such as project charters, detailed project management plans, reports, transition and closure documents. The PM creates & manages project schedules, tracks tasks through to completion, drives risk management, & collaborates with project teams to achieve project deliverables and objectives. The PM manages project resources within a matrix reporting structure; relationship management & communication are important components of the position. The PM builds credibility with stakeholders by building knowledge of stakeholder business areas to understand the context and environment, & to enable detailed and complex discussions about the project. The PM manages stakeholder expectations regarding the project and their roles in the project, & where necessary facilitates discussions, decision making & collaborative resolution among individuals & groups who may have conflicting and/or competing interests and priorities. The PM appropriately applies knowledge management, change management & process improvement principles, knowledge & expertise. As well, the PM must be committed to quality improvement, & possess the skills to use data & information to effectively advance quality & innovation. The PM works independently, but seeks guidance appropriately for complex and/or unfamiliar situations. POSITION IS NEGOTIABLE BETWEEN EDMONTON & CALGARY ONLY.

Required Qualifications:

Post-secondary degree in a health care profession, business or related field. Relevant project management specific education, training, or certification in project management from an accredited institution. 3 years of progressive experience in project management, including knowledge of project management principles, tools and methodologies. Experience with coordinating/leading teams through facilitation/coordination of project planning, execution, monitoring, and evaluation. Ability to work effectively and efficiently in a unique project environment where project resources and subject matter experts have limited availability to contribute; demonstrated ability to move projects forward within these constraints. Demonstrated skill in verbal and written communication; ability to relay or explain complex issues or difficult situations. Experience with MS Office suite, including MS Project and Visio. Motivated and adaptable team player. Proven ability to foster relationships and partnerships with complex and varied internal and external individuals and groups. Ability to work independently, prioritize and meet deadlines. Demonstrated application of systems thinking, and change management.

Additional Required Qualifications:

Knowledge and skills in relevant knowledge management practices and other practices applicable to the KM department and System Innovations and Programs portfolio. Skill and experience in critical thinking, analysis, problem solving, negotiation, investigation and concerns resolution. Demonstrated ability and comfort with decision-making and communication, and the ability to inspire and build confidence in others. Ability to develop and facilitate presentations to convey information or transfer knowledge. Facilitation and mediation skills. Experience leading project teams and large projects within healthcare. Breadth of knowledge of healthcare and healthcare issues.

Preferred Qualifications:

Professional designation in project management (e.g. PMP). 3 years of experience working in a healthcare organization of significant size, complexity and diversity. Training in process improvement, change management and health services planning is an asset. Experience with MS SharePoint is an asset. Experience working directly with clinicians; comfortable communicating with physicians, other health care professionals and executives.
