The University of Alberta Hospital is one of Canada’s leading clinical, research, and teaching hospitals, treating more than 700,000 patients annually from western and northern Canada. The hospital offers a wide range of diagnostic and treatment services, including specialized adult services within cardiac sciences, neurosciences, surgery, medicine, orthopedics, renal, critical care, burns, transplant and trauma inpatient programs as well as, a vast number of ambulatory clinics. This position contributes to the care of patients in the medicine program which consists of 14, 18+ bed units and includes many specialized services. The program utilizes a collaborative care model (COACT) including team nursing for patient care and Connect Care for the patient's electronic medical record. The program has a team of CNEs and CNS to support new hire orientation, training in specialized areas and ongoing professional development and initiatives. We strive to utilize evidence-based practice and quality improvement principles to improve patient and family experiences and outcomes. The regularized relief nurses are integral support to the medicine program. They are expected to support all 14 units in the medicine program with their competent standard nursing practice. They will also be given the opportunity over time to develop their specialized nursing skills in the areas of Charge Nurse, peritoneal dialysis, ventilator care, Intermediary Care and advanced chemotherapy. This position will appeal to those who enjoy a wide variety of patient populations and have the desire to learn a variety of skills.

Description:

As a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), you are part of an interprofessional health care team utilizing nursing processes, critical thinking, problem solving and decision making skills. You will be guided by your education, experience, demonstrated skill level and AHS policies and procedures. You will play a key role in providing safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited practical nurse education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).

Additional Required Qualifications:

Must be able to work to full scope of practice (physically, mentally and emotionally) on this very busy fast paced unit. Must be able to push, pull and lift at least 50 lbs. and have the endurance to. In this position, you will be on your feet for an extended period of time (both walking and standing), and you must be able to assist in transporting, lifting and positioning of patients. You will also be required to bend, lift, push, and pull equipment. Proficient written and verbal communication skills required. Strong critical thinking skills and experience with team nursing. Applicants must have strong critical thinking skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

Candidates should have 2 years acute care experience, be compassionate, adaptable and committed to providing high-quality care. Strong communication skills, patience and kindness are essential for supporting our vulnerable patient population and working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team. Preference to those with completion of Indigenous Awareness learning and other require education and experience with CoACT. Connect Care training and experience preferred.
