Your Opportunity:

The data protection environment consists primarily of CommVault, various Dell/EMC and NetApp storage arrays with disk-based snapshot capabilities combined with site-to-site replication. These environments protect over 5000 hosts, located across the province in six mid-sized hospitals and four large colocation facilities. AHS has approximately 25PB of storage on PowerMax hosting critical environments, Isilon for archive and NetApp running CIFSs & NFS to over 110,000 users. This is a dynamic environment with hundreds of health care “business” units requesting services from the data protection team on a regular basis. As the Senior Data Protection Lead you will need excellent people skills to deal with clients, peers and various IT teams. You will deliver essential services to AHS with respect to data protection services for the recovery of files, databases and hosts within the predefined business timelines for regular operations and disaster recovery. As the Senior Data Protection Lead you will gather initial requirements for new client requests, architect and design solutions including budget details, approvals, documentation and overseeing the implementation. You will work with peers to maintain a data protection strategy, including financial aspects, standards, technology direction, evaluation of new products, engineering of backup/recovery or data protection offerings to address service levels, capacity, performance and availability management and aspects of continuous improvement. To be successful you will have excellent analytical, problem solving, root cause analysis and critical thinking skills. Organizational and planning skills will be an asset in this role. You will have the ability to anticipate internal and external business and stakeholder needs to assist with long-term technology road map planning.


Represents the storage group to IT projects ensuring that these projects align with data protection standards, best practices, and strategic direction. Leads departmental continuous improvement projects and initiatives from initiation through to completion, managing budget, procurement, timelines and coordinating storage architecture, engineering and implementation staff. Able to work with massive scale and complexity. You will be able to ensure that the integrity of our existing environment is maintained as new technology solutions are implemented. Involved with short and long-term tactical and strategic technology recommendations are made to IT leadership. Needs an in depth understanding of data protection solutions for hosts using agent-based backup/recovery, disk-based snapshots, high availability technologies, database, and disaster recovery solutions, NAS and archive technologies. Capable of senior level hands on administration of CommVault for implementation, troubleshooting, remediation, upgrades, and performance tuning. In addition, this role will have leadership responsibilities to mentor other team members, provide direction when needed and oversee related team initiatives. Creation of operational runbooks, training plans and proven skills for day-to-day supervision, project management and annual audits of data protection processes.

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree, diploma or certification from recognized institution in IT or equivalent. 8+ years of data protection leadership and experience in a large and complex IT environment. Proven experience in managing projects or initiatives, including demonstrated ability to guide the efforts of others, solid decision making, coaching and mentoring. Proven ability to foster relationships and partnerships with highly complex internal and external stakeholders. Ability to work with critical systems under tight timelines. Excellent analytical, problem solving, root cause analysis and critical thinking; in addition you should be able to manage a vendor’s support organization to expedite remediation efforts. Excellent organizational and planning skills. Excellent people skills as negotiation and conflict resolution skills are necessary. Ability to anticipate internal and external business and stakeholder needs.

Additional Required Qualifications:

Specialization and applied expert knowledge in data protection architecture and design with the following technologies: CommVault agent based and file-based backup/recovery, Intellisnap, integration with Database, VMware and storage array processes and technology. CommServ and Media Agents, storage targets like: disk-based, Data Domain or tape libraries. Strategy and best practices for: Disaster Recovery, offsite copies/replication, ransomware recovery NetApp, Isilon and Unity disk-based snapshots. Tape Libraries: HP and IBM, Data Domain. Experience in a health services or public sector environment, with an understanding of the alignment between business requirements and patient care services as well as the impacts internally and externally.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with reporting, monitoring, alerting and management tools for enterprise data protection systems. Knowledge of various enterprise data protection solutions, with the ability to align competitive features with business needs of AHS. ITIL foundation certification. Expertise in MS Office suite, including MS Project and Visio.
