Your Opportunity:

Our Rehabilitation Department is proud to be an integral part of the highly specialized care that is provided here. New staff members have access to a robust orientation and mentorship program including demonstration of skills with a buddy, and attendance to in-services on clinically relevant topics. Ongoing professional development is promoted through professional practice lead events, participation in quality improvement initiatives, opportunities to rotate through other service areas, and support of students. Our department includes Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Recreation Therapists, Speech-Language Pathologists and Therapy Assistants. We endeavor to create a climate of safety and inclusivity where we support one another to reach our goals, and work as a team to provide the highest level of care to our patients. You will assist in providing comprehensive service for patients implementing evidence based, client-centered practice based on therapeutic recreation standards of practice. You will work on both a surgical and medical services in providing both group and 1 on 1 recreation interventions under the direction of a Recreation Therapist.

Description:

As a Therapy Assistant, you will work both individually and as part of an interprofessional team under the assignment, monitoring and evaluation of an audiologist, occupational therapist, physiotherapist, recreation therapist or speech-language pathologist. You will contribute to effective and efficient rehabilitation services including direct and indirect client care across the health care continuum (healthy living, getting better, living with illness and disability, end of life care) for all ages as well as non-client service provision. This role will require you to work effectively with internal and external partners, and display professionalism and strong ethics in both client centered care and participation in care teams. You will demonstrate evidence of reflective thinking and lifelong learning that enhances individual and team competency. You will have opportunities to use your interpersonal and clinical skills in contributing to quality improvement, program planning and student supervision.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of diploma from an accredited post-secondary rehabilitation Therapy Assistant program or equivalent training may be considered.

Additional Required Qualifications:

Therapeutic Recreation Assistant diploma/certification/degree from a recognized post-secondary institution. Heart and stroke CPR (BCLS-HCP) certification. Experience working successfully as part of a collaborative interdisciplinary team. Conflict resolution and strong communication skills. Must be able to work independently and within a team environment. An excellent attendance record, reliability and personal suitability must be demonstrated through your employment references. Knowledge and ability to use computer applications such as Microsoft Office (Excel, Word and Outlook). Experience with Connect Care. Work tasks and charting is computer based so there are extensive repetitive motion tasks. Must be able to tolerate long periods of sitting or standing as well as repetitive movements. Must be able to participate in hands on care of patients (i.e. transfers, bariatric clients, bending, reaching, twisting, and walking distances). Physically capable of pushing wheelchairs for an extended period of time and distance. Must be able to lift and carry 10-15 kg regularly if needed.

Preferred Qualifications:

Minimum 1 year of recent experience working in an adult in-patient acute care setting. Minimum 1-year experience working in a Therapeutic Recreation position with seniors and/or individuals with challenges. Experience assisting in mobilizing and transferring patients is an asset.
