Your Opportunity:

The Senior Health Literacy Consultant is a provincial position with an integral role as part of the MyHealth.Alberta.ca team. Reporting to the Manager, MyHealth.Alberta.ca Content Management, the Senior Health Literacy Consultant ensures health information is accessible, understandable, and actionable for all Albertans through MyHealth.Alberta.ca, Connect Care, and the patient portals (MyAHS Connect and MyHealth Records). The Senior Health Literacy Consultant works collaboratively with the MyHealth.Alberta.ca Content Resources team, Alberta clinicians, subject matter experts, healthcare organizations and programs, and external stakeholders to provide Albertans with the patient information they need. A new virtual chronic pain program was established through an Alberta Health grant to design and deliver province-wide universal resources to Albertans experiencing chronic pain. The Senior Health Literacy Consultant will support deliverables for the program, including significant content development on a new website and content for a self-led patient program. Health literacy will be a key component of this work. MyHealth.Alberta.ca is a provincial web resource, and our team reports into the Chief Medical Information Office and works closely with the rest of Clinical Knowledge and Content Management team, provincial clinicians and the public to support Provincial Improvement Network priorities. MyHealth.Alberta.ca provides Albertans with access to extensive trusted consumer health information and online tools that can help them make better decisions about their health, access and interact with the health system, and manage health conditions. Health information on MyHealth.Alberta.ca also flows into Connect Care and MyHealth Records, providing Albertans with seamless and secure access to personalized health information.

Description:

The Senior Health Literacy Consultant uses a specialized breadth and depth of expertise to apply plain language and health literacy principles to evidence-based online health content, tools, and applications on MyHealth.Alberta.ca as well as other resources for the Alberta consumer. The Senior Health Literacy Consultant scans the environment for ideas, best practices, and emerging trends in the provision and delivery of health information. To support continuous quality improvement of health information, the Senior Health Literacy Consultant has in-depth knowledge of adult learning, literacy, health literacy, plain language, social media, and information design. They also have well-developed research skills and an ability to effectively use online reference materials. The Senior Health Literacy Consultant is responsible for setting standards, advising, and maintaining the health literacy and plain language guidelines used by the team and internal and external stakeholders. The Senior Health Literacy Consultant leads the team in developing MyHealth.Alberta.ca communications to user feedback. The Senior Health Literacy Consultant has solutions-oriented problem-solving and analytical skills, strong consultation, communication, and interpersonal skills. They have the ability to work independently and as part of a team. The Senior Health Literacy Consultant anticipates the health information needs of Albertans and identifies innovative, inclusive, and equitable solutions to advance person-centered care and support informed decision-making.

Required Qualifications:

Baccalaureate degree in a health-related field from a recognized university required. Note: A combination of education, skills and experience may be considered.

Additional Required Qualifications:

5 to 7 years' experience and solid knowledge in editing and writing health information in plain language Ability to write medical/clinical information in plain language for the public Experience in writing for the web Advanced knowledge of MS Word and overall understanding of MS Office Suite Strong consultation, interpersonal, consensus-building, and communication skills Experience working across disciplines and developing partnerships Ability to work independently and with a multidisciplinary team Knowledge of: Plain and inclusive language, literacy, health literacy. Readability and health literacy assessment tools. Gender/cultural neutral writing. Technical aspects of writing. Content life cycle management and associated processes.

Preferred Qualifications:

Formal education and professional designation in health literacy and plain language or related field. Experience leading projects, researching and implementing best practice standards, and finding innovative solutions to how people find, understand, and use information Knowledge of: healthcare programs in Alberta, health literacy and plain language industry standards and best practices, user experience best practices, and style guides.
