Under the direction of the Bone & Joint Clinic manager, The Ortho Tech works as a member of the healthcare team, collaborating on the delivery of care to meet the needs of patients/clients. The 0rthopedic Technician is accountable for their own practice according to the standards defined by the College of LPN of Alberta. The ortho tech demonstrates competence in delivering safe, effective and efficient care for Orthopedic patients in the Bone and Joint Clinics. The position requires the incumbent to adapt and thrive in a fast paced, high volume orthopedic clinic. Most of the time will be spent in the Cast Clinic with occasional coverage in other areas of the bone & joint clinic as required. Direct care includes carrying out surgeon’s orders to apply/remove/adjust casts, splints and braces. Perform wound care, dressing changes, suture, staple and/or pin removal.

Description:

As an Orthopaedic Technician (Ortho Tech), you will apply, adjust, and remove casts, splints and traction equipment utilized in the care of orthopaedic patients (clients, residents). You will observe, monitor, report and document changes in the patient's physical, mental and emotional state, while providing safe and effective, quality care. You will play a key role in providing safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited Licensed Practical Nurse education program. Active or eligible for registration with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA). Completion of an accredited specialty Orthopaedic Technician program. Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).

Additional Required Qualifications:

Graduation from a recognized Licensed Practical Nurse Program Current CLPNA registration Current BCLS-HCP certification Completion of a CLPNA recognized Orthopedic training program Ability to lift minimum of 25 lbs. Proficiency in reading, writing and speaking English Proficiency using computer Microsoft software (word, excel, office, outlook) Proficiency using Connect Care, Netcare, Impax Minimum 1 year experience working in an Orthopedic area Minimum 1 year experience using EPIC in an Ambulatory Orthopedic Clinic Setting Strong interpersonal and communication skills Demonstrated organizational skills and competence in time-management Ability to adhere to AHC Code of Conduct & Patient Confidential Policy Ability to work independently and prioritize own workload Ability to multi-task in an environment with frequent interruptions Demonstrates proficiency in clinical assessment skills within scope of practice

Preferred Qualifications:

Member of Canadian Society for Orthopedic Technologists Previous Emergency department experience Previous Cast Clinic experience
