Your Opportunity:

Medicine Hat Regional Hospital (MHRH) offers a full range of acute and outpatient care with over 275 inpatient beds. As the Unit Manager for the Geriatric Assessment Unit, you will responsible for the leadership of the Geriatric Assessment Rehabilitation Unit (2 North) as well as the assigned senior's health programs; including the Senior Services Day Program and the Geriatric Assessment Team. You will hold a key leadership role in the South Zone Operations and will report to the Director. The Manager is accountable for the delivery of high quality, accessible, sustainable, patient and family-focused care for their assigned clinical operations unit(s) and/or program(s). You will also demonstrate leadership at a site level supporting various site initiatives. Description:

You will be required to maintain visibility in the areas to help problem solve and support staff, participate in scheduling staff with accordance to departmental policies and provisions outlined in the Collective Agreements, and assume the lead and responsibility for recruitment, retention, hiring, coaching, mentoring, and performance management of staff. You will accurately manage and monitor budget expenditures and identify requirements for labor, supplies, and equipment, promoting and facilitating the development of staff in collaboration with the Clinical Nurse Educator. The Geriatric Assessment Unit (2 North) is a 30 bed unit that services the need for geriatric assessment and rehabilitation of patients both within the site and in the community and surrounding areas. This is staffed by RN’s, LPN’s and HCA’s. The team also consists of Physiotherapy, Occupational therapy, Speech Therapy and a Social Worker. The Senior Services Day Program provides high-quality care and activities to adults over the age of 65 to help extend their ability to live in their community. This program runs 5 days a week. They specialize in Dementia and Mental Health treatment. The Geriatric Assessment Team operates 5 days a week to support follow-up appointments a Geriatrician and the team also consists of a Registered Nurse and Social worker. They see referrals from inpatients and outpatients who are over the age of 65, living in the Medicine Hat community and are willing and accepting of assessment and support. While providing clinical leadership within Seniors Health, the Manager will be responsible for creating innovative strategies to advance professional nursing knowledge while successfully managing patient care delivery, quality standards and staff development.

Required Qualifications:

Knowledge: A minimum of post-secondary education in a health profession. Registration with an appropriate Alberta Regulated Health Profession. A demonstrated clear pattern of professional and personal development. Experience and Technical Skills: Progressive leadership experience in a healthcare environment in an organization of significant size, complexity, and diversity. Uses strategic thinking, taking into account long-term goals assessing options and implications. Demonstrated ability to manage change and create innovative solutions for complex and diverse issues. Ability to manage diverse human, financial and physical resources within a complex environment. Strong organizational skills, client-focused orientation and commitment to providing long-term quality services. Experience in collaborating with physicians and other healthcare professionals.


Additional Required Qualifications:

Social Skills: Leadership skills, including effective communication skills, demonstrated ability and comfort with decision-making responsibilities, coaching and teaching, and the ability to inspire and build confidence in others. Ability to foster a climate of cooperation among, and build solid relationships with, public agencies, government, boards, committees and other partners. A combination of knowledge, technical, skills and social process skills may be considered.


Preferred Qualifications:

(1) year nursing experience in a supervisory or leadership role (i.e. CNE, Nurse Clinician, Charge Nurse) within the last three (3) years. Experience working with Geriatric Assessment Team or similar. Participation in or leading quality improvement projects. Leadership development courses. Quality Improvement certification. Change Management certification.
