Your Opportunity:

This Maintenance Worker III position reports to the Manager of Engineering Services, Facilities Maintenance & Engineering (FME), at the University of Alberta Hospital (UAH). The role supports the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of building support systems within a large, complex acute-care healthcare environment encompassing approximately 650,000 m² of clinical, diagnostic, research, and mechanical space. The Maintenance Worker III performs skilled preventive and demand maintenance activities focused on air distribution and filtration systems that support indoor air quality, pressure control, and infection prevention standards across the UAH site. Responsibilities include maintaining air handling and filtration systems, supporting HEPA filter recertification activities, monitoring and recording system performance data, assisting with shutdown coordination, and completing minor repairs in accordance with established healthcare and safety requirements and direction from the applicable Lead Hand. The role also supports site-wide building services, including routine lighting maintenance, standard wall clock replacement, and surplus coordination activities. This includes completing lamp changes, replacing standard wall clocks and batteries, and coordinating required documentation for surplus equipment removal in support of clinical and support areas. Working collaboratively with Facilities Maintenance & Engineering trades, the Maintenance Worker III supports integrated system performance in occupied clinical environments. The incumbent works independently with minimal supervision, applies sound judgment in a safety-critical environment, follows established procedures and infection prevention and control standards, and responds to planned and unplanned service demands. This position is available to Edmonton Zone as needed.

Description:

As a Maintenance Worker III, you may perform a variety of skilled maintenance and repair work on patient and hospital equipment and complex mechanical systems to ensure safety and efficient operation of the building systems and equipment. You may utilize your maintenance skills and experience in the performance of preventative and demand maintenance within the exterior and interior of the building. Your duties may include troubleshooting and repairing electronic components on patient and hospital equipment; monitoring, troubleshooting and performing repairs on boilers, HVAC, medical air and vacuum systems and pure water systems. In addition, you may be required to coordinate and assign work to other Maintenance Worker staff in order to meet operational requirements.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of post-secondary education in a related field and/or 1 year specialized/technical training in a related field OR 5th Class Power Engineer Certificate as per ABSA kW rating guidelines or AHS standards where boiler support is necessary. Possession of a valid driver's licence.

Additional Required Qualifications:

The incumbent must demonstrate basic working knowledge of building systems, including air handling, ventilation, and filtration systems, as well as the safe use of hand and power tools required for maintenance activities. The incumbent must demonstrate working knowledge of working in a facilities maintenance or building operations environment. The incumbent must be physically capable of performing maintenance duties, including lifting, bending, kneeling, crouching, climbing ladders, working at heights, and working in hot, dirty, or confined environments. Basic computer skills and the ability to accurately document work activities are required. Good verbal and written communication skills are required. The incumbent must be able to work independently and effectively within a multidisciplinary team, manage competing priorities, respond to service requests, and comply with established safety and organizational policies.

Preferred Qualifications:

Building Environment Systems Technology certification, additional post-secondary education, technical training related to building operations or maintenance is preferred and must be clearly demonstrated on the resume. A minimum of 2 years of experience working in a facilities maintenance, building operations environment, hospital environment is considered an asset. Additional post-secondary education or technical training related to building operations or maintenance is considered an asset.
