This position is based in the Pre-Admission Clinic (PAC), and the Short Stay Surgery Unit at the University of Alberta Hospital - the successful applicant will be required to work in all areas. Both areas are integral components of the Operative Services Portfolio at the University of Alberta Hospital (UAH). The University of Alberta Hospital is one of Canada’s leading clinical, research and teaching hospitals, treating more than 700,000 patients annually. A Level 1 Trauma Center, the UAH provides surgical access to various specialties including, Neurosurgery, OHNS, Urology, General Surgery, Ortho Trauma, Plastics, Burns, Spine, iMRI, and Solid Organ Transplant Services. As a member of the multidisciplinary team caring for adult patients, the Licensed Practical Nurse is responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient care in accordance with UAH policies and procedures. The Licensed Practical Nurse will provide care, support, advocacy, and education for the adult patient, their families, and caregivers. Responsibilities include Preparation of adult surgical patients undergoing scheduled elective surgeries. Post-op (phase 2 recovery), and discharge of Adult Day Surgery and Extended Day Surgery patients. The PAC nurse completes relevant pre-operative assessments and provides the necessary patient and/or family education during a Pre-admission visit, both in person and/or virtually. Completion of an accredited practical nurse education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).
Additional Required Qualifications:Active registration with CLPNA. Certification/current experience with IV initiation & phlebotomy. Demonstrated excellent assessment, leadership, and patient care skills. Strong communications skills (verbal/written). Strong interpersonal & problem-solving skills. Proven reliability/dependability required. Ability to deal with patients who are acutely ill in an unpredictable and stressful environment. Experience orientating new staff/students. Ability to work in a physically demanding environment: Considerable standing/walking; lifting, positioning, pushing and/or transferring patients; considerable reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching (continuously for 5.5 - 7 hours per shift). Walking (continuously for 5.5 - 7 hours per shifts) and lifting up to fifty pounds. Pushing beds/stretchers multiple times for prolonged distance between units. Able to work staggered shifts. Must have 3 years current adult surgical nursing experience or recent phase II recovery experience.
Preferred Qualifications:Advanced knowledge of regional/neuroaxial/multimodal anesthesia. Advanced knowledge of chronic pain. Advanced knowledge of ERAS, STOPBang/OSA, NRT, Infection Control, & Health Promotion strategies. Computer literacy (Connect Care). QI experience. Strong communication skills. Recent/previous short stay surgery experience. Certification with the Canadian Nurses Association in Medical/Surgical or Perianesthesia Nursing.
