The University of Alberta Hospital (UAH) Critical Care Program consists of General Systems Intensive Care Unit (GSICU) and the Edmonton Firefighters’ Burn Treatment. General Systems ICU and the Edmonton Firefighters’ Burn Treatment Unit are looking for: Second Year Nursing students to join our team as Heath Care Aides! Nursing students must be enrolled in an approved Alberta nursing program and have successfully completed a minimum of 100 hours of practicum. As a member of the multidisciplinary team, the Health Care Aide (HCA) is responsible for assisting with the operational needs in the Critical Care Program at the UAH (GSICU/Surge/Burn Unit). It is a program requirement to be trained and work on the Burn Unit and GSICU. Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills. Ability to communicate in a concise and accurate manner. Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills. The HCA must be able to identify their own learning needs and seek guidance in professional practice where knowledge deficit occurs.
Description:
As a Health Care Aide (HCA), you will work as a collaborative member of the multi-disciplinary team providing personal assistance including supporting activities of daily living and support services to patients (clients, residents) who require short-term assistance or ongoing support, in accordance with the patient care plan and facility policies and procedures. In this position you will work closely with patients, families, and caregivers spanning the continuum of care in home, community or health care facilities assisting nurses with the provision of routine care to meet patients' hygiene, nutrition, mobility, recreation and safety needs, assisting with organized activities or programs and observing and reporting on a patient's mood, health, and wellbeing. Working under a regulated health professional you will be assisting in the maintenance of a safe environment for patients, staff and visitors, and maintaining effective communication with patients and health professionals.

Completion of Health Care Aide Certificate within 18 months of hire and active directory status on the Alberta Health Care Aide Directory. Must provide a confirmation letter as proof of enrolment from the Directory at https://www.albertahcadirectory.com/health-care-aides/confirmation/. Nursing students currently enrolled in an approved Alberta nursing program who have successfully completed a minimum of 100 hours of practicum; and are either in their 1st year of practical nursing program; or 2nd year of baccalaureate nursing or psychiatric nursing program will be considered. Must attest to this compliance and provide proof of qualification.
Additional Required Qualifications:Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP). Previous acute care experience. Previous Burn, plastics experience, or wound care experience. The candidate must have the physical capability to perform all aspects of the role, including the ability to lift up to and including 50 lbs. The position requires strong communication and organizational skills and must be committed to patient and family-centered care. Ability to function effectively as a member of a multidisciplinary team required.
Preferred Qualifications:Basic computer skills as well as familiarity with medical terminology is preferred. Critical Care experience preferred. Second Year Nursing who are enrolled in an approved Alberta nursing program and have successfully completed a minimum of 100 hours of practicum.
