As a key member of the Executive Leadership Team, the CMO will drive strategic clinical initiatives, champion innovation, and lead the delivery of high-quality, patient-centered care across the province. The CMO provides vision, strategic leadership and direction, and executive oversight for all medical operations within Assisted Living Alberta. Description:
Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) provides vision, strategic leadership and executive oversight, and serves as the primary medical advisor to the Executive Leadership Team. The CMO provides medical guidance and advice on clinical operations, risk management, and strategic planning to support the delivery of accessible, sustainable, and integrated medical services in continuing care/assisted living settings in Alberta. This includes establishing and maintaining an effective medical leadership structure, defining roles, responsibilities, and governance processes to support clinical oversight and organizational growth. Responsible for all aspects of medical staffing, the CMO ensures appropriate medical staffing levels and geographic distribution across the province, applying best practices to achieve quality clinical outcomes and meet system-wide performance targets, including leading the recruitment, credentialing, and continuous professional development of medical staff. The CMO develops and implements policies and procedures to ensure alignment with provincial regulations and professional standards, while monitoring, evaluating, and reporting on clinical performance and outcomes, and implement robust quality and safety measures and initiate timely corrective actions to address identified issues and foster a culture of innovation, ethical conduct, and continuous improvement. The CMO represents ALA in provincial and national forums related to healthcare delivery and aging care and maintains strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including government, the Canadian Medical Association, the Alberta Medical Association, the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta, the medical academic community, and related universities to achieve organizational goals. The successful candidate will have current medical licensure (or eligibility) in Alberta, with certification by the College of Family Physicians of Canada or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. A minimum of 10 years of leadership experience in healthcare operations, including at least 3 years in a senior leadership role in clinical services or healthcare operations. Experience in assisted living, long-term care, or senior care environments. Eligibility to be a member of the AHS Medical Staff.
Additional Required Qualifications:
Demonstrated experience in leading, supporting, and mentoring medical leaders and clinical teams. Proven expertise developing, implementing, and leading quality improvement programs or initiatives, with the ability to develop and execute organizational strategies, manage complex change, and achieve measurable outcomes. Exceptional communication, negotiation, and relationship management skills, with the ability to influence diverse stakeholders. A strong commitment to ethical decision-making and professional integrity. Proven leadership at the provincial or national level in clinical quality or healthcare delivery. Experience and proven skills in leadership, strategic planning, operational planning, and change management with a commitment to delivering compassionate, high-quality care that prioritizes patient and family needs. Expertise in planning for medical capacity, service delivery, and resource alignment to meet current and future needs, anticipating future trends and positioning the organization for long-term success. Expertise in leading organizational transformation and fostering adaptability across multiple organizational levels. Proven ability to build partnerships and engage diverse stakeholders effectively, while upholding a commitment to integrity, transparency, and ethical decision-making.
Preferred Qualifications:
Canadian Certified Physician Executive (CCPE) credential is highly desirable asset.
