Alberta Health Services (AHS) provides alternative job opportunities for those International Medical Graduates (IMGs) who are not able to obtain independent licensure on their own and/or are unable to obtain a residency position. The Alberta Clinical and Surgical Assistant Program (ACSAP) programs put candidates through a six-month assessment and evaluation that, upon successful completion, can lead to a full-time and permanent acute care coverage role that addresses clinical and/or surgical coverage shortages. Associate Physicians are important members of the collaborative care team at AHS, functioning as mid-level providers under the supervision and direction of physician supervisor(s) to provide acute care coverage within our hospitals. Physician Associates are registered for supervised practice with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA) under the Limited Practice Registry and provide clinical support under the direction of AHS Medical Staff. Alberta Health Services is currently recruiting for multiple positions in Northern Alberta. Associate Physicians are needed for ICU, NICU and specialty services in OBGYN, orthopedic surgery, general surgery, ophthalmology, ENT, urology, palliative care, and pediatrics. Associate Physicians will provide day and after-hours coverage and will be integrated into the current healthcare team, which includes fellows, NP's, residents and clinical associates. In addition to a competitive rate of pay, AHS currently has a Remote Retention Allowance in place to an annual maximum of $3,000. This allowance is non-pensionable and is payable on an hourly basis for all hours paid at the basic rate of pay.
Description:
All clinical activities are performed under the supervision of the surgeon / physician lead and in collaboration with the multidisciplinary care team. Some of the associate physician responsibilities can include, but are not limited to, completing admissions, ordering and performing selected diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, assessing and responding to the patient’s medical needs as they arise and planning care throughout the patient’s hospitalization. Role: You will have comprehensive knowledge of current Associate Physician theory and practice; document procedures performed on patients by Associate Physician; participate on clinical committees, research and special projects; maintain, operate, calibrate and monitor surgical equipment for regular use; prepare patients for surgery and perform pre-operative assessments as directed; assist with the insertion of devices such as nasogastric tubes, IV’s, intra-arterial lines, PIC lines, etc.; assess and discuss management plan of patients in Pre-admission Clinic; collaborate effectively with all team members; use critical thinking skills.

Preferred Qualifications:
Applicants with recent experience in the clinical management of critically ill adult patients and experience in the Canadian health system are preferred. Preference will be given to individuals with surgery training in Canada.
