Assistant Head Nurse
Your Opportunity:
Reporting to the Unit Manager or designate, the Assistant Head Nurse provides effective clinical leadership and functional supervision, in addition to front line Registered Nurse duties as outlined in the RN or RPN Job Description. The Assistant Head Nurse is expected to promote quality patient care and team effectiveness through clinical and professional role modeling. The Assistant Head Nurse supports a respectful workplace by using effective interpersonal and conflict resolution skills to promote achievement of organizational goals and attention to policies and procedures. Fosters team/group effectiveness by modeling (building capacity, teaching, mentoring) excellent practice and interpersonal relationships; and, identifies, communicates and seeks to resolve staff issues. The AHN refers issues of financial, disciplinary, or potentially negative media coverage to the Manager or designate for their guidance or resolution. Keeps team apprised of significant relevant events.
Description:
As an Assistant Head Nurse, you will be responsible for staff assignments, patient flow and acting as a role model, clinical resource and advocate for nursing staff. In addition to providing frontline nursing care, as required, you will take a leadership role in the promotion of quality patient care and the implementation of operational priorities. Your in-depth knowledge and skills, advanced judgment and clinical experience, will assist in providing solutions for complex health care issues at all levels with patients, interprofessional teams, administrators and policy makers. You will play a key role in providing safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.

Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP). Additional Required Qualifications:Must have strong clinical nursing skills with experience in clinical practice, leadership, facilitation, coaching, people management, change management as well as quality and operational improvement. Knowledge of acute care is required. Knowledge of AHS, Alberta’s healthcare structure, and of collective agreements. Baccalaureate degree in Nursing required. Demonstrated experience in clinical nursing practice, of which a minimum of 3 years clinical nursing experience is required. Current BCLS-HCP required- issued from Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada (HSFC) only.
Preferred Qualifications:Current NVCI training an asset. Demonstrated experience in a leadership role (e.g. Charge Nurse, Nurse Educator, Professional Practice Lead, etc.) an asset. Equivalency of education and experience will be considered.
