Anesthesia Assistant

Anesthesia Assistants (AA) are highly skilled professionals who work under the direction of licensed anesthesiologists (specialist physicians) and as part of anesthesia care team to design and implement anesthesia care plans. AA's have completed an accredited post graduate program and have experience and expertise in anesthesia areas of specialty including pediatrics, cardiovascular, neurology, etc. Using expert knowledge, clinical inquiry and assessment skills to guide complex clinical decisions in time sensitive situations, the AA plays an important role in the Anesthesia Care Team. This role is a multi-site position for AHS facilities within the Edmonton Zone. The successful applicate will have a home site and be able to work at up to 2 additional sites. Daily work includes comprehensive pre-operative patient assessments; development and Implementation of anesthesia care plans that include airway management, general anesthesia, regional anesthesia, and monitored anesthesia care; administration of medical gases, medications, blood or blood products, and crystalloid or colloid solutions; interpreting various invasive/non-invasive monitoring techniques and blood tests and evaluating patient’s response to interventions; assisting with nerve block placement and/or clinical assessment; internal transport of ventilated and/or anesthetized patients; communication and coordination with the surgeon, surgical team, and anesthesiologist; crisis management by recognizing and reporting critical events to the supervising anesthesiologist and other appropriate physicians and implementing interventions; accurate, complete, clear, and concise clinical documentation of all health services provided.

Successful completion of an accredited post-graduate Anesthesia Assistant Program. Active registration with the applicable regulatory body. Canadian Society of Respiratory Therapists (CSRT) membership with Certified Clinical Anesthesia Assistant (CCAA) designation.
Additional Required Qualifications:Eligible for Anesthesia Assistant membership with the Canadian Anesthesiologists’ Society (CAS). Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS) certification. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification. Preference for candidates with experience doing general anesthesia maintenance, neuraxial anesthesia maintenance, MAC, endoscopy, pre-anesthesia clinic, and/or catheter/interventional lab. Two years recent, related operating room or critical care experience with certifications in intubation, arterial line insertion and autologous transfusion. Experience in a minimum of 3 of the following services: General Surgery, Neurosurgery, Ophthalmology, Oral Maxillofacial, Orthopedics, Otolaryngology, Plastics, Spine, Thoracic, Trauma, Urology, Vascular and Women’s Health. The incumbent must possess excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills, have a positive attitude, and initiative and be highly motivated with the ability to work independently and under supervision.
Preferred Qualifications:Preference for candidates with experience doing general anesthesia maintenance, neuraxial anesthesia maintenance, monitored anesthesia care, endoscopy, pre-anesthesia clinic, cardiac/catheter lab, and interventional radiology. Leadership and academic experience valued. Applicants with expertise in Connect Care and experience with interprofessional teams are preferred.
