Your Opportunity:

Reporting to the Patient Care Manager, the Unit Manager provides leadership and management to this 39-bed, fast-paced, dynamic Medical Teaching Unit, also known as the Ward of the 21st Century. Direct reports of over 120 include a variety of disciplines such as RN, NC, HCA, UC, CNE and the MTU Nurse Liaison.

Description:

The incumbent will be responsible for ensuring the provision of high quality and safe patient care for an acute, complex internal medicine patient care population in collaboration with a multi-disciplinary team that includes a large number of physician learners on the multiple physician teams (MTU). As the ‘living laboratory’ for the W21C (Ward of the 21st Century) research center, the unit manager will also support research projects that are occurring on the unit. The roles and responsibilities overall include the effective and efficient management of human, material and financial resources and an expectation to provide leadership and demonstrate the organizational values of AHS. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Support facilitation and promotion of optimal flow for patients within the site and the successful discharge to home or alternate destination from hospital. Primarily responsible for day-to-day activity and needs of the unit. Primary responsibility for unit staffing, timely staff recruitment, performance coaching including performance reviews and involvement in performance management. Knowledgeable clinical resource for unit and its multi-disciplinary team members in support of day-to-day operations and AHS initiatives. Mentorship of unit staff for benefit of their development and optimal patient care. Facilitates and supports coordination, communication and problem solving with multi-disciplinary team members for effective patient and family centered care.

Required Qualifications:

Minimum 1 year management experience in a unionized healthcare environment within the last 3 years. Current CARNA and BLS registration/certification. Five years of experience in a healthcare environment. Demonstrated progressive leadership in a formal or informal leadership role (in scope or out of scope). Demonstrated routine use of emotional intelligence. Demonstrated experience in change management and project coordination or management. Demonstrated excellence in diplomacy, interpersonal skills, communication skills, and conflict resolution among leaders, staff, patients and families. Demonstrated leadership in engaging staff, interprofessional teams and/or management teams. Successful time management, prioritization skills and ability to cope with stress.

Preferred Qualifications:

Demonstrated expertise in coaching for performance. Involvement in site change initiatives, demonstrating a strong ability to collaborate. Acute care experience in internal medicine of 3 years or more an asset.
