Your Opportunity:
The Ophthalmology (Eye) Clinic provides care for patients requiring a wide range of diagnostic assessments and urgent evaluations, including visual acuity testing, intraocular pressure measurement, retinal imaging (OCT, fundus photography), visual field testing, fluorescein angiography, and slit-lamp examinations. The clinic also supports emergency assessment for conditions such as acute vision loss, ocular trauma, retinal detachment symptoms, and postoperative complications. The Unit Manager ensures effective patient flow, adherence to clinical standards, and strong interdisciplinary collaboration to optimize patient outcomes.
Description:
The Unit Manager (UM), Ophthalmology (Eye) Clinic, is accountable for the leadership, coordination, and operational management of daily clinic activities to ensure the delivery of safe, efficient, high-quality, patient and family centered care. In partnership with the Patient Care Manager (PCM), the UM provides stewardship of human, financial, and material resources in alignment with the vision, values, and strategic priorities of Alberta Health Services. Accountable for clinic-level operational, quality, and service outcomes, the UM contributes to strategic objectives within the Surgical Services portfolio. Working collaboratively with the PCM and the UM, Day Surgery/Surgical Short Stay and Pre-Admission Clinic, the role supports integrated service delivery and coordinated care across the surgical continuum. Key responsibilities include workforce planning, staffing, recruitment, employee engagement, attendance management, labor relations, performance development, and succession planning. The UM leads quality improvement, patient safety, and change initiatives while ensuring compliance with professional, regulatory, and organizational standards. Through visible leadership, coaching, and mentorship, the UM fosters a culture of accountability, collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement, supporting a high-performing team committed to excellence in ophthalmic care.

Bachelor's degree in a health-related field. Current professional registration in good standing. Minimum of five years’ leadership experience. Demonstrated pattern of ongoing professional and personal development. Completion of leadership development courses with evidence of continued growth. Proven leadership ability within a complex healthcare environment. Demonstrated proficiency in human resources management, including recruitment, retention, performance management, attendance management, staff development, and application of collective agreements. Ability to manage financial resources, including budget oversight and variance reporting. Strong computer proficiency. Effective communicator with strong organizational skills and a patient and family centered approach to care. Demonstrated ability to make decisions, coach and teach others, and inspire confidence within the team. Skilled in managing change, developing innovative solutions, and functioning effectively in dynamic situations. Ability to foster collaboration and build strong relationships within an interprofessional team. Strong critical thinking, analytical ability, and complex problem-solving skills. Self-directed, highly motivated, and able to work independently. Connect Care experience.
Additional Required Qualifications:As Required.
Preferred Qualifications:Master's degree in a health-related field. Quality Improvement Certification (AHS AIW, Green Belt or equivalent). Change Management Certification (PROSCI or equivalent). Leadership experience within an Ophthalmology (Eye) Clinic or Surgical role. Experience and understanding of ophthalmology specific clinical workflows, diagnostic testing processes, and clinic scheduling systems. Knowledge of Surgical Services Information Systems and the ophthalmic booking and scheduling process.
