Join the Obstetrics leadership team at Sturgeon Community Hospital as the Unit Manager – Postpartum, providing operational and clinical leadership for safe, high-quality, patient- and family-centered care. You’ll lead a multidisciplinary team, overseeing staffing, workforce planning, performance management, quality and safety initiatives, resource use, and organizational goals. Collaborating with physicians, educators, nurses, allied health, and operational leaders, you will champion evidence-based practice and positive outcomes for patients, families, and staff. The ideal candidate demonstrates leadership, communication, and change management skills, fostering an environment where staff feel valued and empowered. The Postpartum Unit cares for postpartum patients and newborns, working closely with Labour and Delivery, the Obstetrical OR, and community partners. As part of the leadership team, you’ll contribute to operational excellence and continuous service development. This role requires presence in the unit, including prolonged standing. Given healthcare’s 24/7 needs, scheduling flexibility is essential—you must be available to support the unit during evenings, weekends, and off-hours as needed.
Description:
Reporting to the Patient Care Manager, the Unit Manager – Postpartum is accountable for the planning, coordination, implementation, and evaluation of patient care services within the Postpartum Unit at Sturgeon Community Hospital. The incumbent provides clinical and operational leadership to support the delivery of safe, effective, patient- and family-centered care for postpartum patients and their newborns. Responsibilities include recruitment, orientation, performance management, attendance support, staff development, and fostering a positive work environment. The Unit Manager is responsible for monitoring unit performance, supporting quality improvement and patient safety initiatives, and ensuring effective utilization of human, financial, and material resources. The Unit Manager works collaboratively with physicians, clinical educators, registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, allied health professionals, support services, and operational leaders to promote effective interdisciplinary practice and optimal patient outcomes. The role provides leadership in policy implementation, practice change, accreditation readiness, risk management, and continuous improvement activities. The Postpartum Unit works closely with the Labour and Delivery Unit, Obstetrical Operating Room, and community partners to support coordinated care and successful transitions across the continuum. As a member of the Obstetrics leadership team, the Unit Manager contributes to program planning, service development, and organizational initiatives. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong leadership, communication, and relationship-building skills and will support a culture of accountability, collaboration, respect, and excellence. Flexibility in scheduling is required to meet operational demands within a 24-hour, 7-day-a-week healthcare environment.
