Peter Lougheed Centre (PLC) is a 600 bed acute care hospital located in northeast Calgary, Alberta, Canada and is operated by Alberta Health Services. The PLC offers both inpatient and outpatient services to a variety of medical, surgical, pediatric and women's health patients. Unit 54 at PLC is a 30 bed unit with a general medicine focus, providing services to a variety of patients with complex medical issues. This passionate team is seeking an enthusiastic leader who is familiar with the operational and nursing processes of an acute care unit. The successful candidate will be joining a dynamic leadership team which is always entertaining new and creative solutions, utilizes a quality management framework to monitor key metric performance, enjoys team camaraderie, and engages in shared learning and development. Reporting to the Manager, the Unit Manager (UM) is a key leadership role supporting the goals and strategic direction of Unit 54, the medicine portfolio and PLC, as well as supporting the vision, mission and health/business plan of Alberta Health Services. The UM works in a decision-making and accountability relationship with the Manager, and the Unit Managers for Units 42 and 43. Description:
The UM is responsible & accountable for making department level decisions & for providing front line team leadership & organization to Unit 54; promoting excellence, safety, quality & support of innovation in the clinical provision of patient care. The UM is a strong leader who promotes professional team development & creates & sustains a healthy work environment which includes team culture, emotional resiliency, & occupational health & safety. The UM coordinates staff to align with clinical demand, which includes recruitment, scheduling, retention, performance evaluation, & performance management. Additionally, the UM coordinates equipment & supply needs with fiscal evaluation. The UM establishes & maintains positive & productive working relationships with both clinical & administrative leaders within the medicine portfolio, PLC site & the zone. In promoting the PLC principle of patient & family-centred care, the UM liaises with patients & their families to establish positive working relationships & support efficient & effective transitions in care. Candidates are expected to demonstrate proficiency in the following areas: role-modeling AHS values; balancing multiple, competing demands & conflicting priorities; excellent analytical & decision-making skills, based on a framework of patient & family-centred care, safety & quality improvement; team facilitation using proven change management principles & ability to motivate others to achieve organizational goals; leadership skills, including demonstrated ability & comfort with decision making responsibilities, coaching, & the ability to inspire & build confidence in others; conflict resolution & negotiation skills; management of human, financial & physical resources; strength in establishing & maintaining effective working relationships with stakeholders.

Bachelor’s degree in a health-related discipline. Current registration with the appropriate professional association. Minimum two years previous experience in an informal or formal health services leadership role, ideally in an acute care environment.

Preferred Qualifications:
Master’s degree in a health-related discipline. Minimum 3 years' experience in the past five years working in acute care. AIW (Alberta Improvement Way) or equivalent Quality Improvement methodology (Lean, Six Sigma) training. Change management training (Prosci).
