Unit Manager
Your Opportunity:
Unit 4 at the Alberta Children’s Hospital is a 27-bed combined medical/surgical unit. The nursing staff is a combination of 8 hour and 12 shifts with a RN/LPN staff mix. Patients are generally admitted to Unit 4 for pediatric medical and surgical needs with a focus on Trauma, Orthopedics, Plastic Surgery, Metabolic Disorders, Endocrinology, Eating Disorders and Mental Health. Unit 4 is a high intensity and fast paced unit caring for a patient population with diverse and complex conditions that require variable lengths of stay. The Nursing Support Team (NST) also consists of an RN/LPN staff mix that supports patients from birth to 18 years of age on Units 1, 2, 3, 4, Surgical Short Stay and the Rotary Flames House. Managing these teams requires excellent skills in the following areas: critical thinking, communication, teamwork, prioritization, time management, advocacy, professionalism, and diplomacy. Description:
The Unit Manager is responsible and accountable for providing direction, team leadership, decision-making, and organization of the activities on Unit 4 and NST, as well as site initiatives. All activities are in support of the vision, mission, and business plans of Alberta Health Services and goals across the Child Health portfolio. The Unit Manager is responsible for facilitating change management and quality improvement in a fiscally accountable manner. The Unit Manager is responsible for clinical supervision, recruitment, coordinating staffing, team development, and performance management/appraisals for staff.

Graduation from a recognized Bachelor Level Degree nursing education program. Active registration and practice permit with CRNA. Minimum 3 years’ experience within the past 5 years of acute pediatric nursing. Minimum 3 years’ experience within the past 5 years in a management and/or leadership position within health care.
Additional Required Qualifications:
Excellent computer skills (Microsoft o/s, WFM, RMS, Oracle, WBT, RLS, WHS, Excel, etc.). Demonstrated effective communicator with strong organizational and influential skills, patient-family focus, and commitment to providing quality services. Excellent analytical, critical thinking, and decision-making skills. Ability to coach, teach, inspire, and build confidence in others. Demonstrated ability to manage change and function in dynamic situations. Ability to foster a climate of cooperation and collaboration and to build relationships. Strong conflict resolution and negotiation skills. Demonstrated clear pattern of professional development. Self-directed and highly motivated.
Preferred Qualifications:
Completion of 6 Leadership related courses in the past 3 years. Previous human, financial, and physical resource management experience in a leadership position with AHS. Previous experience in leading/supporting quality improvements projects. Knowledge of the principles of rotation management/ rotation optimization.
