Description:
As a Unit Clerk, you will be responsible for the efficient flow of communication between health professionals, departments, patients and families while maintaining confidentiality of patient information. You will also be responsible for a variety of administrative tasks which may include reception, greeting and directing visitors, patients and health professionals, maintaining patient records and charts, transcribing and processing physician orders as well as scheduling patient tests and/or treatments. You will also be responsible for performing a range of administrative activities in support of the unit.

Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent. Completion of an accredited Unit Clerk Course or equivalent training program.
Additional Required Qualifications:Proficiency in Connect Care and ability to manage referrals. Demonstrates ability to multitask in high acuity, fast paced environment dealing with multiple competing demands. Minimum 2 years of full-time experience in the Emergency Department or ICU as a unit clerk. Must have a general understanding of ED, and how to effectively communicate with multidisciplinary team members during high pressure emergencies. Demonstrates effective interpersonal and communication skills through computer, verbal and written means in a professional and mature manner. Demonstrates the ability to work effectively in a team environment with conflict management skills. May be asked to help find information that connects team members with external resources; demonstrates the ability to critically think within your scope as a unit clerk. Proven ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with a multidisciplinary team. Demonstrates the ability to establish positive and professional relationships with patients and families. Must be able to bend down and pick up 10-15lbs. Able to move from sit to standing, twist and reach up above shoulder height in frequent motions. Must be able to tolerate standing up to 30 mins at a time. Must be able to tolerate sitting at desk and typing while staring at computer screen and answering phone calls simultaneously for over 60 minutes at a time. Must be able to independently walk throughout large busy departments several times during shifts.
Preferred Qualifications:Can demonstrate involvement in a working group to better a department. Experience working at Triage as a unit clerk. Demonstrates proficiency in faxing / sharing confidential information to external units and clinics either through connect care or fax. Demonstrates the ability to appropriately scan hard copies of patient records into digital patient records. Familiarity with IFT, iRequest, e-facilities, WFM, and Netcare.
