An exciting opportunity exists to showcase and grow your skills by joining our dynamic, inpatient team within the Cross Cancer Institute (CCI) as an Undergraduate Nursing Employee (UNE). Using advanced competency skills, you will be responsible for treatment modalities such as central line care and access, delivery of medications and care of oncology/hematology patients within a multidisciplinary team. The successful UNE will be a key member of the team utilizing the Integrated Collaborative Practice model. The UNE will identify and assess the holistic needs of patients and their families and provide professional nursing care by utilizing the processes consistent with the philosophy, objectives, and standards of CCA and the CANO standards of practice. The CCI provides comprehensive cancer services for Edmonton and Northern Alberta with the goal to lead in research and best practice by using innovative technologies and collaboration to optimize patient care. An Undergraduate Nursing Employee (UNE) position provides an opportunity for a UNE to develop further competency in the range and complexity of Registered Nurse (RN) or Registered Psychiatric Nurse (RPN) practice. The nursing activities performed and level of supervision required is determined by legislation, standards of supervision outlined by professional associations, AHS and competency of the UNE. You will be guided by your education, experience and demonstrated skill level to play a key role in providing safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.

Required Qualifications:

Current enrolment in an approved Alberta nursing education program leading to initial entry to practice as a registered nurse or registered psychiatric nurse. Current Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support (CPR) certificate. Successful completion of 3rd year of an RN nursing education program and a minimum of 600 hours of clinical practice in an approved RN education program; or currently in the final year of an after-degree RN nursing education program and a minimum of 600 hours of clinical practice in an approved RN education program; or successful completion of 2nd year of an RPN nursing education program and a minimum of 600 hours of clinical practice in an approved RPN education program.

Additional Required Qualifications:

One year of acute care experience and/or training within the past 2 years. (Students/Grad Nurses with preceptorship or practicum experience in oncology/hematology acute care will be considered equivalent). Acute care is defined as experience and/or training on an inpatient medical or surgical or emergency unit performing patient assessments, interventions, administering intravenous and oral medications, and providing patient education. Experience caring for oncology/hematology patients. Must be able to perform repetitive physical duties that include walking long distances, pushing, pulling, bending, reaching above shoulder, and able to lift a minimum of 15 kg. Must be able to assist with safe patient transfers and other duties related to patient care. Proficient written and verbal communication skills for safe patient/family care and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in administering medications – oral, intravenous, subcutaneous, intramuscular, intranasal, and topical). Experience working with elements of CoAct and collaborative care. Palliative certification and/or experience. Exceptional time management skills. Experience with Peripheral Venous and Central Venous Access Devices, and wound care. Demonstrate a commitment to and participation in professional growth.
