Therapy Assistant
Your Opportunity:
The Rehabilitation Oncology team at Cancer Care Alberta at the new Arthur J.E. Child Comprehensive Cancer Centre is looking for a temporary full-time Therapy Assistant (TA) to join our team. Our interdisciplinary team includes Occupational Therapy (OT), Physiotherapy (PT), Speech-Language Pathology (SLP), Therapy Assistants (TA), and Physiatry. If you’re an experienced, team-oriented Therapy Assistant who enjoys continuous learning and supporting adults living with cancer, then this role is for you! About the Role: TAs on our team support both outpatient rehabilitation services and inpatient units, including the Intensive Palliative Care Unit, Medical Oncology/Radiation Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplant/Hematology. Key Responsibilities of this role: Deliver and progress therapeutic programs (1:1, group, and virtual) as directed by SLPs, OTs, and PTs. Provide treatment support in areas such as lymphedema management, exercise, mobility/ transfer training, adaptive equipment selection, falls prevention, ADL programs, recreation therapy and speech therapy–related care. Observe, track, and report changes in patient status to therapists or other interdisciplinary team members. Oversee equipment/supply management including sourcing, inventory, and repair coordination. Sew custom supports and garments. Orient and support volunteers; supervise students. Participate in cross-coverage across service areas and engage in cancer-specific professional development. Attend local and provincial meetings (in-person, virtual). This position will be primarily dedicated to inpatient unit coverage with the potential to orient to outpatients. Description:
As a Therapy Assistant, you will work both individually and as part of an interprofessional team under the assignment, monitoring and evaluation of an audiologist, occupational therapist, physiotherapist, recreation therapist or speech-language pathologist. You will contribute to effective and efficient rehabilitation services including direct and indirect client care across the health care continuum (healthy living, getting better, living with illness and disability, end of life care) for all ages as well as non-client service provision. This role will require you to work effectively with internal and external partners, and display professionalism and strong ethics in both client centered care and participation in care teams. You will demonstrate evidence of reflective thinking and lifelong learning that enhances individual and team competency. You will have opportunities to use your interpersonal and clinical skills in contributing to quality improvement, program planning and student supervision.

Completion of diploma from an accredited post-secondary rehabilitation Therapy Assistant program or equivalent training may be considered.
Additional Required Qualifications:Minimum of 2 years relevant experience in an acute care setting supporting Occupational Therapists (OT), Physiotherapists (PT) and/ or Speech Language Pathologists (SLP). A least one year of experience working with adults diagnosed with cancer. Intermediate computer skills including MS Office (e.g. Excel, Word, Outlook). Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Able to work effectively within a patient-centered, interdisciplinary team. Effective time management and organizational skills paired with initiative. Ability to demonstrate critical thinking and decision-making skills in a complex environment. Demonstrated ability to identify and manage conflict situations. Demonstrated effective team player. Open to change and learning new skills/ areas of care.
Preferred Qualifications:Minimum 5 years' experience working as a therapy assistant supporting OT, PT and/ or SLP in an acute care setting. At least two years working with adults living with cancer and/or in palliative care. Within the last twelve months, experience with compression therapy for edema management. Experience with adaptive aids and equipment including wheelchairs/ cushions. Experience facilitating groups (face to face and virtual via Zoom). Experience ordering and managing supplies.
