Alberta Health Services (AHS) is seeking a dependable, self-motivated individual for the position of Environmental Services & Portering Supervisor who is dedicated to high-quality work and safety. This out-of-scope position is located at Red Deer Regional Hospital. Reporting to the Manager of Environmental Services, the Supervisor supports the daily planning and operation of Environmental Services and Portering. These departments are responsible for maintaining hospital cleanliness, managing waste streams, and supporting the safe transport of patients, equipment, and materials throughout the facility. Together, they ensure healthcare environments are properly cleaned, sanitized, and maintained to provide a safe and healthy environment for patients, staff, and visitors. The successful applicant demonstrates strong communication, mentorship, and relationship-building skills and is passionate about promoting a safe and healthy workplace. In collaboration with other departments and Infection Prevention and Control (IPC), the Supervisor ensures all protocols, cleaning standards, and service frequencies are adhered to, particularly in the management of outbreaks and isolation cases. As a visible leader within the facility, the Supervisor is relied upon by staff, patients, and families to ensure a safe and responsive environment.

Description:

The ES & Portering Supervisor oversees Environmental Services and portering operations, ensuring efficient, safe, and high-quality service delivery. This role monitors budgets, tracks key performance indicators, identifies efficiencies, and supports effective use of resources. The Supervisor provides recommendations on staffing, budgeting, and service models to meet operational needs. Key responsibilities include oversight of patient discharge and isolation cleaning, equipment cleaning, and coordination of safe and timely portering services. The role also ensures proper management of waste streams, including general, biomedical, chemical, and recycling. Maintaining a visible presence on-site, the Supervisor acts as the first point of contact for service concerns, resolving issues promptly using strong problem-solving and conflict resolution skills. The position requires extended periods of walking and standing. The Supervisor supports staff success through onboarding, orientation, and ongoing training in line with departmental standards. They are responsible for scheduling, team meetings, attendance and performance management, payroll approval, and completion of probationary and annual reviews. Financial oversight includes monitoring departmental performance to maintain a balanced budget. This role ensures compliance with AHS policies, infection prevention and control (IPC) standards, Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) requirements, and applicable regulations. The Supervisor builds strong relationships with clinical teams, site leadership, and internal partners, regularly reviewing service performance and addressing concerns. Additional responsibilities include recruitment, hiring, performance management, and escalation of significant operational matters to leadership.

Required Qualifications:

Diploma or Degree in Health Care or Business Administration. 1-year of leadership experience in a large institution. Demonstrated ability to coach and mentor others. Proficient use of computer software applications such as Microsoft Office, Excel, and Outlook required. Demonstrated leadership abilities, with strong written and oral communication skills, are essential. To enable applicants to perform their duties safely, they must demonstrate the ability to read, write, speak, understand, and follow written and oral directions in English. Must be dependable, flexible/adaptable, thorough, and be able to work with minimal supervision. A combination of education, training and relevant experience may be considered. Additional Required Qualifications:

All new employees will be required to attend a 4-day Environmental Services Orientation and a 1-day AHS Orientation. Completion of additional online courses are required as per department and AHS standards. Valid criminal record check obtained within the last three months, and a valid work permit/ visa (if applicable). Preferred Qualifications:

Preference will be given to applicants who have a Supervisory/Management Certificate and/or related experience. Experience in Infection Control and Workplace Health & Safety is preferred. 3 years’ supervisory experience and demonstrated knowledge of Environmental Services practices. Experience in a healthcare setting is an asset.
