Your Opportunity:

The Senior Advisor will provide leadership to zone First Nation, Metis and Inuit (FNMI) health initiatives and facilitate collaboration between AHS, government and FNMI communities in the development of health services to address the unique access challenges of FNMI people. All Non-Union/Exempt positions are being reviewed for possible inclusion in the AUPE General Support Services bargaining unit. If this Senior Advisor - Calgary Zone position is impacted, the incumbent will be notified accordingly.


Facilitate collaboration between AHS program leaders and FNMI traditional, political and health leaders to improve the health and wellness of Aboriginal people. Work collaboratively with diverse FNMI communities (rural, remote, and urban), groups and organizations to plan quality, accessible programs and services. Work with AHS staff and physicians to better understand the complex jurisdictional issues affecting health care services and programs for Aboriginal people and ensure continuity of care within a multi-jurisdictional system (local, provincial and federal). Engage FNMI communities by developing trust and collaboration with AHS. Represent the Aboriginal Health Program on Zone committees. Function as a content expert to internal and external partners to influence the development and implementation of culturally appropriate and acceptable Aboriginal health programs and services within the zone. Collaborate with Aboriginal groups and communities in designated geographic area to identify gaps in health programs and services and to plan, develop and evaluate culturally appropriate and acceptable health programs and services. Facilitate collaboration between educational institutions and AHS to develop meaningful local Aboriginal health research and increased educational opportunities for the Aboriginal community. Implement cultural competency and health literacy strategies within the zone. Participate in evaluation of health research and services and advocate for the development of surveillance strategies. Promote the development of Aboriginal demographic health profiles, health indicators and statistics, including a surveillance infrastructure and compatibility of federal and provincial information systems. Create awareness with AHS employees of the barriers (cost of living, remote communities, lack of transportation, poverty) and challenges (lack of literacy) etc.

Required Qualifications:

A Baccalaureate degree in health, health promotion or related field. Healthcare administration experience. More than 5 years’ experience with urban and rural FNMI people/communities. A minimum of 5 years in a leadership role, ideally in an organization of significant size, complexity and diversity. A demonstrated clear pattern of professional and personal development. Working knowledge of the healthcare system. Effective communication, influencing and organizational skills. Client-focused, with a commitment to providing quality services. Proven ability to foster partnerships, establish and maintain strong working relationships with stakeholders, including public agencies and government. Understanding of the politically sensitive nature of working with multiple stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master's degree in healthcare or related field.
