The Senior Advisor, Claims Examiner will manage the insured litigation files for various provincial health agencies and corporations and is expected to deliver quality services on a cost-effective basis. The incumbent will work closely with Legal Counsel and liability insurers to ensure claims are properly defended. Consulting with other professionals within the healthcare system, as required, the incumbent will interpret and anticipate client needs and identify solutions to complex, time-sensitive and standard issues and requests. The Senior Advisor, Claims Examiner reports to the Associate General Counsel, Litigation. The position can be located in Edmonton or Calgary. A hybrid work arrangement is available for this position.

Description:

As Senior Advisor, Claims Examiner you will manage all insured litigation claims, compensation requests and other related matters for four (4) provincial health agencies and numerous provincial health corporations and subsidiary health corporations. You will be accountable for assigned files with general oversight by the AGC, Litigation or other Legal Counsel. The position requires that you provide accurate, concise and timely support for insured claims across the healthcare system. In this position you will ensure claims and potential claims are reported in a timely manner to the liability insurer. You will work closely with HSS Legal Counsel, external legal counsel, adjusters and liability insurers to ensure claims are properly defended. You will consult regularly with other professionals across the healthcare system to interpret and anticipate client needs and identify solutions to complex, time-sensitive and complex issues and requests. You will ensure that all client needs and/or inquiries are responded to and/or seamlessly relayed to the appropriate staff in a timely and professional manner. You will exercise strong judgment with minimum direction in resolving complex or contentious situations. You will prepare regular reporting on insured matters to various client groups, including providing data analysis, interpretation and evaluation as required. You will also prepare reports and provide guidance on the claims reporting process for external annual audit requirements. You will provide support to the AGC, Litigation on a variety of projects and you will participate in various department meetings and committees and other related duties as required.

Required Qualifications:

You must have an Undergraduate Degree (Bachelor, CIP or FCIP or industry equivalent) or an equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered. You must have a demonstrated clear pattern of professional and personal development with previous experience of a minimum of 8-10 years related legal and/or insurance experience.


Additional Required Qualifications:

You will have strong communication and customer service skills and a proactive and positive approach ensuring that all inquiries are effectively dealt with in a timely manner. You will have strong organizational skills in order to manage a high volume of files. You will have experience in several key functions: a) project work, processing and maintaining legal files; b) research, data analysis and/or interpretation, evaluation methodologies, and developing effective reports; c) as a team member in project planning, execution, reporting, monitoring and evaluation; d) problem solving and concerns resolution; and e) strong commitment to operating within a team environment and the ability to work with others to achieve common goals. In order to excel in this position, you will need the ability to: a) communicate effectively with a variety of stakeholders to respond to standard requests and relay information; b) adapt to conflicting and changing priorities; c) work independently, use initiative, take responsibility, be proactive and work in a complex environment; d) exercise critical thinking skills and strong judgment with minimum direction in resolving complex or contentious situations; e) manage sensitive issues with confidence, tack and diplomacy; and f) prioritize and manage conflicting priorities in an effective manner.


Preferred Qualifications:

Previous experience in the public sector or with a large organization is an asset.
