Your Opportunity:

This position will incorporate doctoral training in the science of implementation which is the study of what implementation approaches work (or don’t), for whom, how, why, and under which conditions. Individual will lead conversations about change in ways that draw on the strengths of multiple improvement approaches, including change management, knowledge management, quality improvement, complex systems, human factors design and engineering, participatory human-centred design, among others. This position will facilitate theory-based coordinated planning and evaluation of implementation and improvement efforts to guide the implementation of system level priorities for AHS, including the Alberta Surgical Initiative and Home to Hospital to Home Transitions work.


Leads high-level, complex research activities and analysis specific to knowledge translation and implementation: these will be a mix of projects involving external stakeholders as well as initiatives within AHS. This work requires a high degree of knowledge about the science involved in this work as well as highly developed abilities in management and communication. This work includes: Setting objectives and timelines for each implementation project. Determining which resources are needed and draws on the knowledge of clinical and methodological experts. Overseeing operations and quality of work regarding all areas of research project(s) execution: screening, inclusion/exclusion, data extraction, data entering, and data base development. Establishing and maintaining the network of internal and external experts that will be required on each project. Applies mixed method skills (qualitative and quantitative expertise) to inform implementation study design, measurement choices, data collection, analysis, interpretation and reporting regarding the advancement of work. Fosters communication with partners within AHS and beyond (e.g. academic institutions and national/international organizations)

Required Qualifications:

A PhD in a health related field (e.g., Community Health, Sociology, Psychology, Social Work, Health Administration, Epidemiology, Health Services Research, etc.) with a strong mixed method expertise; Experience with the principles of knowledge translation and implementation science, and building and maintaining partnerships with multiple stakeholders to achieve common goals; Requires 5-7 years experience independently leading large research projects, including proposal preparations, project coordination, and ability in writing and editing scientific manuscripts; and, Specialization in studies related to the field of Implementation Science

Requires 5-7 years experience independently leading large projects, including proposal/plan preparations, project coordination, and ability in writing and editing scientific manuscripts; Strong leadership and management skills to leads projects and people; Ability to work collaboratively in an environment characterised by ambiguity, shifting timelines and priorities, and multiple projects underway simultaneously; Demonstrated excellent skills in oral and written communication; Demonstrated excellent organisational and interpersonal skills and ability to meet project deadlines; and, Skilled in facilitation, collaboration, negotiation and problem-solving.
