Respiratory Therapist I - Complex Care

Come and join our team at the University of Alberta Hospital! The Complex Care Respiratory Therapist provides specialized respiratory care for patients with complex airway and ventilatory needs, including spinal cord injury, neuromuscular conditions, and chronic respiratory disease, while supporting safe transitions between ICU, inpatient units, rehabilitation, and community settings. The role includes performing and teaching therapies such as LVR, mechanical insufflation/exsufflation, tracheostomy care, and ventilator weaning. The Complex Care RT will act as a liaison between the Chronic Ventilation Team and interdisciplinary partners to ensure seamless communication and consistent care planning. The therapist will develop individualized respiratory care plans, participate in rounds and case conferences, and be an advocate for patients and families regarding resources, equipment, and funding. They will provide education and consultation to clinical teams across UAH, RAH, and assist surrounding rural and urban facilities with best practices related to chronic ventilation, and help coordinate discharges by identifying appropriate placements, securing funding, and collaborating with community vendors and agencies. Additionally, this role involves offering both formal and informal teaching to clinical staff, patients, and families; delivering outreach education to build capacity across the corridor; and contributing to protocols, pathways, and educational materials that support consistent, evidence‑informed care across the corridor.
Description:
As a Respiratory Therapist I, you will assess patients (clients, resident), develop and implement respiratory therapy care plans and monitor their progress. You will be responsible for various diagnostic and therapeutic equipment and interventions. You will collaborate with various clinical teams and groups to enhance clinical outcomes. You will provide training and assist health care providers in the use and care of respiratory equipment as well as educate patients and their families regarding diseases, medications, equipment and treatments.

Active or eligible registration with the College and Association of Respiratory Therapists of Alberta (CARTA).
Additional Required Qualifications:Graduate of an accredited Respiratory Therapy program. Registered and in good standing with the College of Respiratory Therapists of Alberta (CRTA). Minimum 3 years of experience working as a Respiratory Therapist in an acute care hospital in the last 8 years Demonstrated expertise in tracheostomy care, LVR, cough assist, and ventilator weaning. Strong communication, advocacy, and teaching skills. Ability to thrive in a high-pressure, fast-paced hospital environment Work collaboratively within a team environment and effectively contribute to planning processes. Knowledge of community and provincial resources for chronic ventilation and complex care patients. Ability to work independently and collaboratively across multiple sites. Excellent communication, critical thinking, and collaborative skills. Strong interpersonal and critical thinking skills
Preferred Qualifications:Experience with spinal cord injury, neuromuscular disorders, and long-term ventilation. Experience in care coordination or case management.
