Alberta Health Services-CancerControl Alberta is responsible for cancer treatment and research for the province of Alberta. The Department of Cancer Epidemiology and Prevention Research is seeking a full-time Research Associate/Project Coordinator based in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The position will be based within the research program of Dr. Christine Friedenreich who is conducting cutting-edge, population-based cancer research with a focus on modifiable lifestyle risk factors for cancer. Current studies focus on the role of physical activity and sedentary behaviour in cancer prevention, rehabilitation and survival as well as biologic mechanisms involved in cancer incidence, recurrence and survival. The Research Associate/Project Coordinator will work within an established research support team that currently includes several MSc-trained epidemiologists and statisticians, exercise physiologists, database managers and data support specialists, systems analyst, grant administrators and research assistants. As part of ongoing development, the Research Associate/Project Coordinator will also have access to weekly and monthly seminars, research forums, journal clubs, invited speakers and visiting scholars and will have the opportunity for further education and training in epidemiology as needed.


As part of a dynamic team, the Research Associate/Project Coordinator will have specific individual responsibilities for Dr. Friedenreich’s research projects in the Department of Cancer Epidemiology and Prevention Research by providing support to activities related to obtaining and conducting external peer-reviewed epidemiologic research studies. The successful candidate will contribute to a variety of research studies and will typically work on more than one concurrent task. Independent judgment and expertise will be essential in performing the job duties that include: Carries out data cleaning and data processing related to the research program. Participation in the development of procedures/administrative materials related to the research program. Carries out moderately complex research assignments in support of the research program. Tracks study data and compile reports, and conducts analyses of study data. Liaise with the Data Support Unit for development of tracking systems and upgrading of databases. Performs literature reviews as required. Performs systematic reviews and meta-analyses as required. Assists in the design of research studies including data collection methods. Assists in the preparation of recruitment and data collection materials for research projects. Assists in the writing and preparation of grant applications and manuscripts for publication. Preparing presentations for conferences. Prepares written summaries of data analyses including figures, tables, as needed for scientific papers. Writes and prepares scientific manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals.

Required Qualifications:

The successful candidate will have a Master’s degree in Epidemiology. Experience writing literature reviews, participating in the planning and execution of research projects is essential. Performing statistical analyses using statistical packages would be beneficial.
