Registered Nurse / Registered Psychiatric Nurse

The Registered Nurse (RN)/Registered Psychiatric Nurse (RPN) works as a member of the multidisciplinary health care team in the in-patient acute psychiatric nursing unit collaborating on the delivery of holistic, comprehensive care to meet the needs of individuals, families and/or communities. The RN/RPN’s scope of practice includes physical and mental status assessments, planning, coordinating, implementing and evaluating care as well as discharge planning for the purpose of promoting, maintaining or restoring mental health, and preventing mental illness, injury and disability. The RN/RPN provides care throughout the life span, in all stages of health and complexities of illness. This position is responsible for communicating with other departments and services, across the Addiction and Mental Health continuum, to ensure the provision of comprehensive, high-quality care to promote recovery and wellness. The RN/RPN may also facilitate learning for clients and families as well as provide individual and group therapy. This position has transitioned to Recovery Alberta effective September 1, 2024. As a Registered Nurse (RN), you will provide a wide variety of nursing services to patients, families, communities and populations, while taking necessary steps to ensure their safety and well-being. In your role, you will utilize nursing processes, through critical thinking, problem solving and decision making, as well as teach, counsel and advocate on behalf of patients and their families. You will play a leadership role in supporting an integrated and holistic approach to patient care, health promotion and maintenance. You will provide safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS. PLEASE NOTE: Provisional Permit Holders shall be paid $39.58 /hour - $54.16/hour. Upon being entered into the register of Registered Nurses, the rate of pay shall be adjusted to the rate of pay applicable to a Registered Nurse in accordance with AHS/UNA Article 25.02(b)(i) or (ii) as applicable.

Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP). If you have not practiced as a Registered Nurse within the last five (5) years, completion of the following free courses is required: CRNA Medication Management - Chapters 1 - 4 (https://connect.nurses.ab.ca/home/%2Flearning-and-development%2Flearning-modules%2F) and the NextGenU Health Assessment Resources Certification (https://courses.nextgenu.org/course/view.php?id=271#section-0)
Additional Required Qualifications:Knowledge of the Addiction and Mental Health related resources across the Calgary Zone required. Demonstrated leadership, organizational and clinical skills in addition to being self-directed and able to work collaboratively in a team environment required. Computer proficiency required. Knowledge of verbal de-escalation techniques required. Minimum 1-year recent nursing experience in an acute in-patient psychiatric setting required. Working Knowledge of Psychotropic medications required. Experience in administering the Mental Status examination. Knowledge of the Mental Health Act. Experience in various risk assessment i.e. Suicide risk, Homicidal risk, violent risk. Knowledge of the addiction and mental health continuum of care. Candidate should be willing to work days, evenings and weekends and be prepared for charge duties. Candidate must have working knowledge and understanding of AMH Medical Capabilities.
Preferred Qualifications:Certification in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) preferred. IV Certification preferred. Working Knowledge or experience about the various therapeutic modalities i.e. CBT, DBT, Supportive therapy, Motivational interview Knowledge/Understanding of DSM-IV and 5 preferred.
