Your Opportunity:
We are actively seeking a Registered Nurse (RN) who functions effectively in a fast paced, acute ambulatory environment and who is interested in working within a dynamic team focused on building a leading comprehensive cancer program in Calgary. Reporting to the manager, the Oncology Surgical Procedures Unit (OSPU) Nurse is part of the multidisciplinary healthcare team. The OSPU Nurse uses the nursing process, critical thinking, and decision-making skills to care for Day Surgery patients in the OSPU and Radiation Therapy Dayroom. This position provides safe, ethical, and patient centered care to adults referred for cancer treatment. The RN integrates and applies knowledge of cancer pathophysiology, disease progression, and symptom problems to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate the outcomes of best practice and evidence-based care and other clinical interventions. The RN will identify and assess the physical, psychological, sociological, and spiritual needs of patients and their families and provide professional nursing care to patients and their families utilizing the nursing process consistent with the standards of the Nursing Department and the standards for Oncology Nursing practice issued by CANO. The RN promotes self-care by providing education to the patient and their family about the patient's specific diagnosis, symptom management, disease progression, treatment plan, and specific procedures. This role engages with all interdisciplinary members of the health care team, stakeholders and community resources to offer holistic care of these patients by way of education and symptom management related to disease progression, procedures, and treatments. The RN provides emotional support and counseling for patients throughout their disease process and/or treatment and acts as a patient advocate when appropriate.

As a Registered Nurse (RN), you will provide a wide variety of nursing services to patients, families, communities and populations, while taking necessary steps to ensure their safety and well-being. In your role, you will utilize nursing processes, through critical thinking, problem solving and decision making, as well as teach, counsel and advocate on behalf of patients and their families. You will play a leadership role in supporting an integrated and holistic approach to patient care, health promotion and maintenance. You will provide safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS. PLEASE NOTE: Provisional Permit holders will be paid $40.76 to $55.79 per hour. Upon obtaining a full practice permit, the rate of pay will be adjusted to the applicable Registered Nurse rate in accordance with UNA Article 25.02(b)(i) or (ii), as applicable.

Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP) certification. If you have not practiced as a Registered Nurse within the last five (5) years, you must complete the following free courses: CRNA Medication Management (Chapters 1-4), available at https://connect.nurses.ab.ca/home/learning-and-development/learning-modules/ and the NextGenU Health Assessment Resources Certification, available at https://courses.nextgenu.org/course/view.php?id=271.
Additional Required Qualifications:Experience with the following skills: intravenous, hydrations, blood transfusions, wound management, PICC, port care and administration of medications. Demonstrated strong skills in critical thinking, autonomy within RN scope of practice, adherence to policy and procedures. Able to navigate case management with the coordination of multiple aspects of a patient’s care journey for numerous patients at one time. Ability to walk long distances and assist with patient transfers and mobility, requiring physical exertion (Pushing, pulling, bending, reaching). Able to work in a fast paced and unpredictable environment with distraction and frequent need to reprioritize tasks as they come up. Exhibit excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to effectively maintain collaborative working relationships. Be self-directed and exercise independent decision making, sound nursing judgment and critical thinking skills. Strong time management and prioritization skills, with a demonstrated ability to function effectively within a dynamic environment working independently. Exhibit leadership skills, including demonstrated ability and comfort with decision making responsibilities, coaching/teaching, and the ability to inspire and build confidence in others.
Preferred Qualifications:Experience in Day surgery. Membership in Oncology associations/groups (i.e. CANO). Knowledge and experience with the following programs: ARIA and Netcare. Central venous catheter certification. Experience in oncology ambulatory clinics and treatment
