Your Opportunity:
The Adult Post Anesthetic Care Unit is an integral component of the Operative Services Portfolio at the University of Alberta Hospital (UAH). The University of Alberta Hospital is one of Canada’s leading clinical, research and teaching hospitals, treating more than 700,000 patients annually. A Level 1 Trauma Center, the UAH provides surgical access to various specialties including, Neurosurgery, OHNS, Urology, General Surgery, Ortho Trauma, Plastics, Burns, Spine, iMRI, and Solid Organ Transplant Services. The Post Anesthetic Care Unit provides comprehensive care in a critical and highly specialized area to post-surgical patients as they recover from general and/or regional anesthesia. The PACU RN is adept in the assessment and management of the patient’s immediate post-surgical life sustaining needs, and ensures patients safely progress along the post anesthetic continuum. The successful incumbent will gain valuable nursing experience working alongside skilled staff, in a fast paced and dynamic environment, supporting AHS’s commitment to providing safe, high quality, family centered care.
Description:
As a Registered Nurse (RN), you will provide a wide variety of nursing services to patients, families, communities and populations, while taking necessary steps to ensure their safety and well-being. In your role, you will utilize nursing processes, through critical thinking, problem solving and decision making, as well as teach, counsel and advocate on behalf of patients and their families. You will play a leadership role in supporting an integrated and holistic approach to patient care, health promotion and maintenance. You will provide safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS. PLEASE NOTE: Provisional Permit holders will be paid $40.76 to $55.79 per hour. Upon obtaining a full practice permit, the rate of pay will be adjusted to the applicable Registered Nurse rate in accordance with UNA Article 25.02(b)(i) or (ii), as applicable.

Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP) certification. If you have not practiced as a Registered Nurse within the last five (5) years, you must complete the following free courses: CRNA Medication Management (Chapters 1-4), available at https://connect.nurses.ab.ca/home/learning-and-development/learning-modules/ and the NextGenU Health Assessment Resources Certification, available at https://courses.nextgenu.org/course/view.php?id=271.
Additional Required Qualifications:Required certification/current experience with IV initiation, phlebotomy, care of the ventilated patient, ECG Analysis, vasopressor medication. Excellent assessment, organizational leadership, and patient care skills. Ability to communicate findings (verbal and written) in a concise and accurate manner. Strong interpersonal & problem solving skills. Proven reliability/dependability. Adaptable to a fast-paced, rapidly changing environment with high acuity patients. Ability to deal with unpredictable and stressful environment. Ability to maintain a physically demanding job. 2 years of Phase 1 Recovery and/or recent critical care experience. Advanced knowledge of regional anesthesia, neuroaxial anesthesia, multimodal analgesia and chronic pain. Must be able to work staggered shifts, possibly extended shifts.
Preferred Qualifications:At least 4-6 months current PACU experience within a tertiary setting. Previous orientation/preceptorship for new staff and students. ACLS. Experience with patient care quality improvement/quality assurance. Canadian Nurses Association in Perianesthesia Nursing, Critical Care, and/or Medical/Surgical Certification. National Association of Perianesthesia Nurses of Canada membership.
