Registered Nurse
Your Opportunity:
Reporting to the care managers of the Southern Alberta Forensic Psychiatry Services, the Registered Nurse (RN) will carry out professional duties with both the site's Assessment patients (court ordered assessments of individuals facing charges under the Criminal Code of Canada) and Not Criminally Responsible due to Mental Disorder (NCR-MD) patients. Nursing duties include effective communication among team and stakeholders, patient admission and discharge processes, completion of nursing histories in a timely manner, one to one interview, history documentation, medication administration, attending weekly conferences, facilitation of patient groups, observing patients in all settings, documentation of patient's presentations/behaviors and maintaining a safe and secure environment at all times. Professional duties with the site's NCR-MD program include patient supervision in and out of the SAFPC building, attending/facilitating groups, promoting the enhancement of independence via the site-specific recovery and rehabilitation model. This position has transitioned to Recovery Alberta effective September 1, 2024. As a Registered Nurse (RN), you will provide a wide variety of nursing services to patients, families, communities and populations, while taking necessary steps to ensure their safety and well-being. In your role, you will utilize nursing processes, through critical thinking, problem solving and decision making, as well as teach, counsel and advocate on behalf of patients and their families. You will play a leadership role in supporting an integrated and holistic approach to patient care, health promotion and maintenance. You will provide safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS. PLEASE NOTE: Provisional Permit holders will be paid $39.58 - $54.16 per hour. Upon obtaining a full licence, the rate of pay will be adjusted to the applicable Registered Nurse rate in accordance with UNA Article 25.02(b)(i) or (ii) as applicable.

Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP) certification. Additional Required Qualifications:Minimum of two years’ experience, in the last five years, in a general mental health inpatient setting, excellent written and verbal communication skills, organizational skills and critical thinking skills. Strong understanding of mental health decompensation and psychotropic medications and their side effects. Current Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) certification, current N95 fit test. Nursing practicum at forensics will be considered in the absence of 2 years' experience. Basic knowledge of the Mental Health Act and the Not Criminally Responsible due to Mental Disorder (NCR-MD) legislations and the Alberta Review Board. Active or eligible registration with CRNA or RPN's.
Preferred Qualifications:Minimum one year experience in an inpatient forensic setting. Connect Care training and knowledge of Collaborative Problem Solving. Within the last 5 years, 1-3 years proven skills and experience in psychiatric and medical assessment and crisis intervention. Additionally, must have familiarity of the expectations of medical capabilities within mental health and be able to provide treatment as directed, assess potential difficulties and respond to medical emergencies.
