Your Opportunity:

Brooks Health Centre is an acute and continuing care facility with 28 acute care beds, 10 ER beds, 2 OR theatres and one endoscopy suite. Its core programs include short stay surgical, endoscopy, 24 hour emergency, ambulatory care services, obstetrics and community health. AHS is responsible for the operations of the hospital. The Registered Nurse provides safe and effective nursing care according to AHS policies and best practice standards. You will coordinate and collaborate with the interdisciplinary team, patient and family. You will utilize the nursing processes, critical thinking skills and problem solving skills to coordinate care, teach, counsel and advocate on behalf of patients and families. You will observe, monitor, report, and document changes in the patients physical, mental, and emotional state. You will periodically assume charge nurse responsibilties once you are established on the unit and orientated to the role. Brooks is one of fastest growing communities in Alberta with a unique multi-cultural flavor. Residents enjoy a wide range of indoor and outdoor recreational activities including camping, boating, fishing, sailing, kayaking, water skiing (water sports) ice fishing and skating in winter, just to name a few. This position qualifies for the Canada Student Loan Forgiveness Program, which reimburses $4,000 per year (up to a maximum of 5 years) for working in the rural Brooks setting. Please note, this facility provides Long Term Care (LTC) or Designated Supportive Living (DSL) services and by Order of the Chief Medical Officer of Health, many AHS employees are restricted to work only at a single LTC/DSL site for the remainder of the pandemic. Speak to the hiring manager who will confirm if, as the successful candidate in this position, you will be restricted to work at only one LTC/DLS site in Alberta.


As a Registered Nurse (RN), you will provide a wide variety of nursing services to patients, families, communities and populations, while taking necessary steps to ensure their safety and well-being. In your role, you will utilize nursing processes, through critical thinking, problem solving and decision making, as well as teach, counsel and advocate on behalf of patients and their families. You will play a leadership role in supporting an integrated and holistic approach to patient care, health promotion and maintenance. You will provide safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CARNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).

Additional Required Qualifications:

Minimum of one (1) year experience in adult medical/surgical nursing experience within the last 2 years.

Preferred Qualifications:

Peri-Operative Certificate with Surgical, Endoscopy and PARR experience an asset. Ability to take “on call” responsibilities; available to report for duty within less than 30 minutes. Ability to collaborate within the expectations of a highly complex integrated team. Demonstrate advanced problem solving skills, integrated critical thinking and good judgement. Good communication skills.
