Your Opportunity:

Reporting to the Facility Manager and working under limited supervision, this position performs journeyman level repairs and maintenance on refrigeration and air conditioning systems. The role requires independent judgment, technical expertise, and adherence to applicable specifications, drawings, codes, and departmental policies. The primary work location is the Royal Alexandra Hospital. However, the incumbent may be assigned to other sites within the zone as needed, including multi-site duties as directed by the FM&E Director or Management. Perform repairs, maintenance, and adjustments on hospital refrigeration and air conditioning equipment in compliance with current codes and hospital quality and safety standards. Diagnose equipment issues, disassemble components, redesign or repair malfunctioning parts, and reassemble systems. Contribute to the design and implementation of the preventive maintenance program; recommend major repairs or equipment modifications; maintain related records. Provide guidance, direction, and on the job training to non-journeyman staff. Requisition, receive, and store required supplies, parts, and materials. Maintain up to date knowledge of technological advancements in the field and identify training or materials needed to stay current. Keep accurate documentation within the computerized maintenance management system for both demand and preventive work orders. Participate in initiatives that promote, maintain, and improve quality and safety for patients, families, and caregivers.

Description:

As a Refrigeration Mechanic, you will be responsible to assemble, install, repair, and maintain refrigeration and air conditioning equipment. You will also be required to perform continued preventative maintenance and operational performance checks on air or water cooled systems in accordance with Alberta Health Services standards and practices.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited Journeyperson Refrigeration Mechanic Certificate from Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training.

Additional Required Qualifications:

5–7 years of specialized technical experience, ideally in a hospital setting. Strong knowledge of the refrigeration trade, relevant codes, safety regulations, lockout procedures, and confined space requirements. Proven ability to troubleshoot and resolve technical issues using sound judgment and initiative. Proficient with tools, equipment, Microsoft programs, and building maintenance systems. Clear and effective communication skills in English, both written and verbal. Reliable, cooperative, and able to work independently or as part of a team. Able to provide direction and support to others as needed and collaborate effectively with management, supervisors, and hospital staff.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with repair and maintenance of chillers is a definite asset.
