Casual Refrigeration Mechanic Opportunity for the University of Alberta Hospital This is an exciting opportunity to join the University of Alberta Hospital as a Casual Refrigeration Mechanic. This position will support our team in completing a variety of in-house projects and provide coverage during periods of staff illness, injury, or vacation. As part of our team, you'll gain valuable experience working with a wide range of refrigeration equipment, including ultra-low temperature freezers, ice machines, refrigerators, walk-in coolers, air-cooled chillers, and other essential systems that support patient care and hospital operations. You may also have the opportunity to collaborate with skilled trades teams including plumbing, HVAC, instrumentation, and electrical, giving you a broad understanding of how systems interconnect within a complex healthcare facility. Description:

As a Refrigeration Mechanic, you will be responsible to assemble, install, repair, and maintain refrigeration and air conditioning equipment. You will also be required to perform continued preventative maintenance and operational performance checks on air or water cooled systems in accordance with Alberta Health Services standards and practices.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited Journeyperson Refrigeration Mechanic Certificate from Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training.

Additional Required Qualifications:

Seasoned/Specialized technical/professional experience required (i.e. 5-7 years). Minimum of 5 years of experience in repair and maintenance and operation of a wide range of hospital refrigeration equipment such as ultra-low freezers, refrigerators, ice machines, computer room air conditioning and other refrigeration systems. There is a very wide variety of complex refrigeration equipment present in the hospital environment which is maintained by the refrigeration mechanic; therefore, the mechanic must have extensive experience in this area. Testing, adjustment and repair of various types of hospital related refrigeration equipment. Considerable initiative and judgement involved. Incumbent is allowed considerable use of judgement in solving technical problems arising in day to day operations. In addition to knowledge related to the refrigeration trade, some familiarity, education and experience in the areas related to other trades is required. Must possess initiative and be capable of giving direction and supervision as required. Ability to work under emergency conditions and in difficult situations. Alert for occupational hazards of working with refrigeration and air conditioning systems. Must be thoroughly familiar with all tools and equipment used in the trade and knowledgeable of the refrigeration and air conditioning code and all safety regulations.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with repair and maintenance of commercial and industrial chillers is a strong asset. First Aid, Fall Arrest, and Lift Training required. Proficient with Microsoft applications and comfortable using email. Familiarity with maintenance management software such as e-Facilities (Oracle). Strong team player with the ability to coach others and a willingness to learn from peers.
