Your Opportunity:

The Adult Acute Services units of the Edmonton zone Addiction & Mental Health Programs are dynamic, patient and family centered inpatient units where all members of the teamwork within the collaborative care (Co-ACT) framework, according to the Addiction & Mental Health – Edmonton zone Principles of Care. Reporting to the Unit Manager or designate, and under the direction and supervision of a staff nurse, the psychiatric/mental health aide performs activities that support meeting the personal care needs and comforts of patients: in accordance with patient care plans and hospital policies and procedures. This includes (but is not limited to) assisting in the provision of routine care to meet patient’s hygiene, nutrition, mobility, recreation and safety needs. You will also assist in the maintenance of a safe environment for patients & families, staff and visitors. Off campus patient escort duties may be assigned. To be successful in this role, you are a person who: Has strong verbal communication skills (English language proficiency is required). Active listening skills Congruent non-verbal communication skills Has the ability to establish and maintain relationships built on mutual respect, appropriate sensitivity and transparency, empathy and compassion with patients & families, colleagues, professional and medical staff. Has sound self-management skills – being able to manage own emotions and strong feelings; maintain a calm and tactful composure under a broad range of challenging circumstances and think clearly and stay focused under pressure. Works well in a team environment Enhance, support, empower and otherwise increase patient engagement in treatment and change. Has demonstrated ability to follow instructions and complete assigned tasks. Has an excellent attendance record.

Description:

As a Psychiatric Aide, you will work as a collaborative member of the multi-disciplinary team to meet the personal care needs and comforts of patients in accordance with the patient care plan and facility policies and procedures. You will assist nurses with the provision of routine care to meet patients' hygiene, nutrition, mobility, recreation and safety needs as well as assist with organized activities or programs. In this position, you will observe and report on a patient¿s mood, health, well-being, maintain effective communication with patients and health professionals, assist with the maintenance of a safe environment for patients, staff and visitors as well as assist in the general support of the work area.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of Grade 12. A combination of education and experience satisfactory to the employer will also be considered.

Additional Required Qualifications:

Mental Health First Aid training. Current BLS certification via Heart & Stroke Foundation. This position has been identified and is anticipated to transition to Recovery Alberta effective September 1, 2024. Preferred Qualifications:

Post-secondary education in social sciences, psychology or health services. Personal Support Aide, Health Care Aide or Mental Health Aide Certificate (equivalencies may be considered). 2 years’ experience working with persons with an addiction and/or mental health issue – preferably in a hospital setting. Computer skills (Connect Care).
