Interesting and Challenging Opportunity for an Engineering Student to Work on New Technology for Cancer Patients. A team at the Cross Cancer Institute in Edmonton is working on a revolutionary way to treat cancer patients. This team is developing a treatment unit that combines a Linear Accelerator (Linac) and a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) system. (For information, see the Linac-MR web page at http://mp.med.ualberta.ca/linac-mr/) The Post Secondary Student - Engineering Assistant is a member of the Linac-MR development project team. The project will build, test, evaluate and implement a new hybrid radiotherapy device that combines a Linac and MRI into clinical practice. The Engineering Assistant assists as part of a team designing components for larger systems. The Engineering Assistant creates 3-dimensional computer models for the Linac-MR system, including all components and assemblies utilizing the SolidWorks software application. The Engineering Assistant is required to produce industry standard manufacturing drawings based on the SolidWorks model, and provide design input into selected component designs. The Engineering Assistant is also required to model existing components and precisely measure, visualize and model complex 3-dimensional objects.

Description:

The Engineering Assistant’s responsibilities include System Modelling, Configuration and Modification; System Design and Project Work; and Design Documentation and Communication. System Modelling, Configuration, and Modification: Assist with modelling the hybrid Linac-MR System; model complex mechanical components and assemblies. System Design and Project work: Assist in the design and coordination of development, testing, implementation and maintenance of technical solutions; Execute phases or components of projects; Participate on project teams to provide input into solutions based on conceptual knowledge and practical experience; provide design input into some component designs; Monitor project progress and due dates, escalate potential problems early and communicate them effectively to stakeholders and/or managers; Maintain active communication with stakeholders to understand their environments. Design Documentation and Communication: Produce industry standard manufacturing drawings using the SolidWorks modelling software; Produce computer models of existing components; use precision measurement tools to make computer drawings of existing parts; create and maintain technical documentation; Perform a variety of related professional level duties to support system design and programs.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of at least 2 years of engineering studies in a Mechanical Engineering degree program at an accredited University. Ability to model complex mechanical components and assemblies. Demonstrated experience with and advanced competency in using 2018 SolidWorks software to model complex components and complex assemblies. Experience creating manufacturing drawings in SolidWorks. Knowledge of material characteristics in order to select appropriate materials for component design. Skills in precision measurement. Strong attention to fine details. Ability to write technical and procedural documentation. Strong oral, listening and written communications skills. Self-motivated with minimal supervision. Ability to work independently and as an effective team member. Must be reliable. Good time management skills, and ability to prioritize tasks.
