Your Opportunity:

The University of Alberta Hospital is seeking a skilled Casual Plumber to join our Facilities Maintenance & Engineering team. In this role, you will support the reliable operation of plumbing, steam fitting, medical gas, and specialty water systems across the hospital. Duties include installing, maintaining, and repairing plumbing, drainage, steam, and water distribution systems as well as servicing reverse osmosis, lab, and dialysis water systems. You will also troubleshoot and maintain medical gas, sterilization, and other specialized piping systems while supporting upgrades and shutdowns in ways that minimize impacts on patient care. All work must meet applicable codes, safety standards, and hospital policies, and you will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to deliver high-quality service. Candidates must hold a Journeyperson Plumber/Steamfitter certification (Alberta or Red Seal) with Medical Gas certification considered an asset. Experience with specialty water treatment systems in healthcare or institutional settings is preferred. Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently or in a team environment are essential. The position requires the ability to lift, carry, and move equipment up to 50 lbs, work in confined spaces and at heights, and perform tasks involving bending, kneeling, and sustained physical activity in varying conditions. Description:

As a Plumber, you will plan, install and service plumbing systems, fixtures, piping equipment and controls used to transport water, waste, gas and air. You will be responsible for monitoring, testing, trouble shooting, documenting and analyzing performance of plumbing, medical gas, domestic hot & cold water, tempered water, glycol, chilled water, natural gas, storm and sanitary sewer, associated distribution and control systems and equipment. In addition, you will prepare feasibility and cost estimates and reports; request or order supplies.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited Journeyperson Plumber Certificate from Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training.

Additional Required Qualifications:

Seasoned and specialized trade service experience is required, typically 3-5 yrs. A minimum of 5 years of experience in the repair, maintenance, and operation of plumbing and piping systems in a complex institutional or healthcare setting is essential. Hospital systems include domestic water, reverse osmosis, dialysis water, laboratory water, medical gas, and sterilization piping. The Plumber must be skilled in testing, adjustment, and repair of these systems to ensure safe, reliable operation. This role requires initiative and sound judgment in solving technical problems during daily operations. Along with plumbing expertise, familiarity with other mechanical trades is an asset. The successful candidate must show initiative, provide direction when required, and work effectively under emergency or challenging conditions. Strong teamwork and collaboration with colleagues, contractors, and hospital departments are essential. Equally important is a commitment to customer care with the ability to communicate clearly, build trust, and deliver professional support to clinical and non-clinical stakeholders. Knowledge of codes, safety regulations, and hospital standards is required along with thorough knowledge of the tools, equipment, and procedures of the plumbing trade.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in healthcare plumbing systems and specialty water services (RO, dialysis, lab). CSA Medical Gas Service Technician certification, Steamfitter certification, and Cross Connection Testing certification are strong assets. Familiarity with maintenance management software such as e-Facilities (Oracle). Proficient with Microsoft applications and email. Strong team player with coaching ability and willingness to learn from peers.
