Physician Assistant - Hospitalist FMC
Your Opportunity:
Hospital Medicine (Hospitalist) Program. Department of Family Medicine, Alberta Health Services. The Hospitalist Program under the Department of Family Medicine with Alberta Health Services is pleased to invite applications for two full-time Physician Assistant (PA) positions. This is the first posting of its kind within the program and represents a unique opportunity to shape the integration of Physician Assistants into our dynamic hospitalist teams at Foothills Medical Centre (FMC) and Peter Lougheed Centre (PLC). The Calgary Hospital Medicine Service is the largest acute care medical service in the region, operating under the Section of Medical Inpatients within the Department of Family Medicine. We provide comprehensive hospital-based care to approximately 1,000 medical inpatients daily across four acute care sites in the Calgary Corridor. Our team of dedicated family physicians delivers high-quality, patient-centered care focused on timely assessment, evidence-informed treatment, and safe transitions of care. We are responsible for the admission, daily management, and discharge of adult patients requiring inpatient medical care who do not require a specialty admitting service. The Section of Medical Inpatients plays a vital role in supporting acute care capacity and enhancing the overall patient experience within Calgary’s health system through a strong commitment to clinical excellence, continuous improvement, and compassionate service.
Description:
The Physician Assistant will provide comprehensive clinical care under the supervision of attending Hospitalist physicians. The primary anticipated role is to support the admitting physician, particularly during periods of high service demand, enabling the attending physician to focus on other key clinical responsibilities such as ward rounding and discharge planning. As these roles are newly established, the successful candidates must demonstrate flexibility, adaptability, and a willingness to evolve alongside the needs of the service. The Physician Assistant may be deployed according to service needs, which may include admissions support, inpatient ward rounding, and discharge coordination depending on site-specific operational demands. This position is intended to be highly collaborative. The Physician Assistant will work closely with Hospitalist physicians, nursing staff, allied health professionals, and subspecialists to provide coordinated and holistic patient care. Responsibilities include supporting patient admissions and initial assessments, assisting with inpatient management and care coordination, facilitating discharge planning and transitions of care, liaising with unit teams and patient families, communicating with primary care physicians and community providers to ensure continuity of care, and providing patient education regarding diagnoses, treatment plans, and discharge instructions on behalf of the attending physician. Clear supervision structures and defined role boundaries will be established to support professional growth, mentorship, and increasing clinical independence within the appropriate scope of practice.
