Your Opportunity:

The Calgary Stroke Program (CSP), Department of Clinical Neurosciences, Alberta Health Services, invites applications for a full‑time Physician Assistant position. The successful candidate will provide patient care at Foothills Medical Centre under the supervision of Stroke Neurologists responsible for two inpatient stroke services. CSP is the only comprehensive stroke centre in the Calgary Zone, providing tertiary‑level care for Southern Alberta and surrounding regions. The program delivers advanced treatments such as mechanical thrombectomy and carotid revascularization and supports a large catchment through centralized and remote consultation. CSP is a collaboration between the Cumming School of Medicine’s Hotchkiss Brain Institute, the Department of Clinical Neurosciences, and Alberta Health Services. It is internationally recognized for innovation in imaging, clinical trials, and global impact, and operates one of the world’s largest stroke fellowship programs. Foothills Medical Centre admits over 1,500 stroke patients per year and operates the Stroke Prevention Clinic. Inpatient care is provided on Units 112 and 100. Sixteen stroke neurologists support acute stroke call and inpatient services, with diverse expertise in education, systems of care, and research. CSP has achieved Accreditation Canada Distinction for 17 consecutive years. Weekly educational rounds and professional development opportunities include Journal Club, Fellow Half Day, case rounds, academic lectures, research, QI, and committee work.

Description:

The Physician Assistant working as part of a dynamic multidisciplinary team, under the supervision of a stroke neurologist will work 38.5 hours/ week to provide comprehensive and quality clinical care to stroke and TIA patients with medical, surgical, and chronic conditions. The responsibilities include sharing day-to-day clinical duties on U112 and U100 with Tier 1 staff (fellows, nurse practitioner, and residents), attending hyperacute STAT stroke runs, documentation of admission, discharge, daily progress notes, procedures, inpatient consultations, etc. examination of patients and formulating care plans under the guidance of the attending or supervising stroke neurologist. Other responsibilities include familiarizing with unit practices and guidelines to ensure consistency of care, communication with families and coordination of care for patients being discharged, collaboration with multidisciplinary team members and specialists and participation in quality improvement initiatives and continuing medical education activities of the section.

Required Qualifications:

Only Canadian citizens or Permanent Residents of Canada who have successfully completed Physician Assistant (PA) training and are eligible for College of Physicians & Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA) registration can apply. Candidates must submit a Curriculum Vitae and evidence of PA training in a recognized Physician Assistant program. Incomplete applications will not be considered. The successful applicant will be responsible for registering and maintaining professional licensure with the CPSA.


Additional Required Qualifications:

During the initial 6 – 9 months of employment, orientation and training will be provided to support acquisition of knowledge and skill in Stroke conditions and ensure smooth transition.
