The Provincial Public Health Laboratory (ProvLab), Alberta Health Services and the University of Alberta, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, are inviting applications from clinical microbiologists to join the ProvLab team. This position is based at the Edmonton site of ProvLab.


ProvLab offers an excellent environment for career development opportunities to pursue clinical and research activities. Our collaborative partners include the Li Ka Shing Institute of Virology, the Departments of Medical Microbiology and Immunology, Laboratory Medicine and Pathology, and the Divisions of Adult and Paediatric Infectious Disease in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, and the School of Public Health. The core functions of ProvLab include (but are not restricted to) testing for pathogens of public health significance, population-based screening, laboratory surveillance to support cluster detection and disease trends of public health significance, specialized diagnostic testing, environmental water testing, education, and research. The Edmonton ProvLab site provides provincial public health laboratory programs, as well as providing acute care microbiology services for the University of Alberta Hospital, Stollery Children's Hospital, and Cross Cancer Institute. The successful candidate will be required to provide diagnostic microbiology consultation, and laboratory and technical expertise. The ideal candidate will also have experience and be knowledgeable in other areas of the ProvLab including: virology, mycobacteriology, bacteriology, mycology, parasitology and environmental microbiology. This individual will also be expected to participate in the undergraduate and post-graduate training programs of the University of Alberta and develop an ongoing research program that complements the activities of ProvLab.

Required Qualifications:

Applications are invited from board certified PhDs, certified as a clinical microbiologist either as a Fellow of the Canadian College of Microbiologists (FCCM) or Diplomate of the American Board of Medical Microbiology (D(ABMM)), or equivalent.

Additional Required Qualifications:

The successful candidate must demonstrate effective communication and leadership skills, and an ability to work in a team-orientated environment.
