Reporting to the Unit Manager for the Pediatric Surgery Clinics, this position functions as part of a multidisciplinary team. The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) - Orthopaedic Tech utilizes the nursing process, critical thinking, problem solving & decision-making skills to provide care to pediatric patients. Actively participates in program development and evaluation, & clinical teaching activities. Under a Physician's written or verbal order, the Ortho Tech is responsible to carry out technical procedures: casting, splinting; removal of sutures, and staples; wound care, and dressings. Assisting Physicians with procedures and other related duties. Responsible for charting all procedures performed on a patient in the EMR. Assists with general duties as required in the clinic like cleaning & restocking As a member of the multidisciplinary team caring for children, the LPN (Orthopedic Technician) provides direct patient care in accordance with both the UAH and Stollery Children's Hospital policies and procedures. The LPN will provide direct care and support to pediatric patients, their families and, caregivers while recognizing the value of and working within a Family Centered Care philosophy. Decisions are made in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team. This position will require the incumbent to leave the Clinic to assist on the inpatient units or in the operating room as per departmental needs. As an Orthopaedic Technician (Ortho Tech), you will apply, adjust, and remove casts, splints and traction equipment utilized in the care of orthopaedic patients (clients, residents). You will observe, monitor, report and document changes in the patient's physical, mental and emotional state, while providing safe and effective, quality care. You will play a key role in providing safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.

Completion of an accredited Licensed Practical Nurse education program. Active or eligible for registration with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA). Completion of an accredited specialty Orthopaedic Technician program. Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).
Additional Required Qualifications:Completion of an accredited specialty Orthopaedic Technician program. Must have excellent customer service and strong interpersonal and communication skills. Must be an analytical thinker with strong problem solving skills. Strong organizational skills with the capacity for self-direction and autonomous practice is required. The ability to prioritize workload and work under pressure with minimal supervision, and ability to adapt quickly and balance numerous demands are desirable qualities and attendance and performance must be acceptable to the employer. Must be able to work effectively in a complex, high paced and noisy clinic environment. Physically able to sit, stand, bend and lift (light loads) for long periods. Expertise in nursing practice, patient education, and planning / coordinating care. Demonstrated proficiency in the assessment, treatment and intervention of pediatric patients. Working knowledge of clean/sterile techniques, Infection and dressing changes related to wound care. Must be currently registered with CLPNA with a CLPNA recognized orthopedic training program. Must be a currently Certified Ortho Technician. The successful candidate must have a positive attitude, demonstrate a professional image and lead with AHS values.
Preferred Qualifications:Minimum of 2 years previous and recent Pediatric clinic/hospital experience required. Canadian Society of Orthopedic Technologists (CSOT) certificate an asset.
