Your Opportunity:

Developmental Disabilities Mental Health (DDMH) within the department of A&MH specializes in supporting the psychiatric care and management of adults with a developmental disability/mental health disorder with behaviour issues & complex service needs. The DDMH program consists of a community psychiatric clinic, a maintenance and stabilization team and an integrated case management team for complex service needs. DDMH provides services in assessment, consultation, support and education. The Occupational Therapist I - Maintenance and Stabilization Team is an essential member of the Maintenance and Stabilization (MainStay) Team. The MainStay team is a new service within the DDMH program that is designed to provide specialized clinical support and care planning for complex clients with challenging behaviours. Reporting to the Care Manager of the DDMH program the OT I will complete sensory processing assessments and development of sensory processing modulation plans for persons with developmental and mental health disabilities. In addition the OT I will provide care planning and behaviour management support. The OT may be required to complete assessments, such as functional cognitive assessment, environmental assessment or assessment for adaptive aids or equipment. The support may be provided in acute care sites, outpatient clinics or the client’s residence. As an interdisciplinary team member, the applicant will collaborate with other allied-health and medical professionals in the support of clients in their care plan. The OT I will conduct evidence-based assessments; and develop and implement concrete and practical sensory, behaviour management strategies that can be utilized by all in the client’s care network. The OT I will provide coaching to clients, families, service providers and medical staff to implement the care and sensory modulation plans.


As an Occupational Therapist I, you will be working both independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team, responsible for enabling occupation through activities of assessment, treatment planning, intervention, consultation, education and follow-up, based on the patient's individualized goals, with outcomes focused on enabling the patient (client, resident) to perform meaningful daily occupations. You will provide clinical direction to therapy assistants, support personnel and students. You will review clinical referrals, accept, screen and assess client needs from an occupational therapy perspective in collaboration with other health disciplines. You will work in partnership with community agencies and providers as appropriate, to facilitate referrals and services to support care transitions in hospital and community settings. You will establish and maintain effective communication with colleagues, medical staff, and healthcare practitioners concerning documentation, treatment plans, progress and discharge. You will participate in client, family and caregiver education in collaboration with other disciplines, producing and maintaining clinical data, information, documentation and verbal reports to support the delivery of occupational therapy services, including charting.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of master's degree in Occupational Therapy from an accredited university program or bachelor's degree in Occupational Therapy from an accredited university program and related experience. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the Alberta College of Occupational Therapists (ACOT).

Additional Required Qualifications:

Ability to thoroughly and accurately collect and document information in a professional and timely manner. Experience in knowledge translation and coaching, has worked in a multidisciplinary team, has demonstrated an ability to effectively manage change and can foster innovate solutions to diverse issues and challenges. Excellent analytical, problem-solving, critical thinking and decision-making skills. Ability to work confidently and independently, self-directed, client-focused and commitment to providing quality services. Knowledge of the developmental disability, mental health and autism fields as well as knowledge in system navigation and the ability to connect stakeholders to available resources. Ability to foster a climate of cooperation and build solid relationships with family members, public agencies and other health care partners. Effective computer, communication, interpersonal and organizational skills are a position requirement. Ability to adapt and innovate in a continuously changing health care environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preference will be given to applicants with experience working with individuals with mental health and developmental disabilities, with a strong focus in Autism Spectrum Disorder. Preference to applicants with experience in supporting clients with mental health disorders and developmental disabilities through a behaviour management, trauma informed care and sensory processing lens and be experienced with psychosocial rehabilitation, applied behavioural strategies and NVCI.
