Description:

The Unit Manager of Inpatient Pediatrics and Maternal Newborn Child provides leadership for their assigned units and reports directly to the Director of Patient Care. This role is accountable for the effective and efficient operation of high-quality, accessible, sustainable, and patient- and family-focused care, while ensuring alignment with the vision, mission, and business plan of Alberta Health Services. The Manager has direct accountability for clinical operations, assigned staff, financial resources, and programmatic requirements, and works in partnership with the Director to set and execute strategic and operational priorities for the unit. The Unit Manager is responsible for developing and maintaining an effective operational and financial framework that supports the delivery of safe, efficient, and evidence-based patient care. This includes budget development and monitoring, effective allocation and stewardship of resources, and ensuring fiscal responsibility while meeting care and staffing needs. The role also involves building and sustaining strong relationships with key stakeholders; supporting change management; promoting team development and collaboration; coordinating staffing and clinical work; and leading recruitment, orientation, performance management, coaching, and professional development. Through consistent leadership practice, oversight of financial and human resources, and a commitment to continuous quality improvement, the Manager fosters a positive team culture and demonstrates strong accountability to staff, patients and families, and the overall purpose and vision of the organization.

Required Qualifications:

A baccalaureate degree in a health care–related field with appropriate professional registration is required, along with a minimum of five (5) years of leadership experience, including demonstrated responsibility within maternal, child, newborn, and/or youth services. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong decision making skills in a complex, interdisciplinary environment, a proven ability to manage change, and the capacity to develop innovative solutions to complex and diverse issues. The ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team is essential.


Additional Required Qualifications:

Current CPR certification Basic Life Support – Healthcare Provider (BCLS–HCP) is required. Proficiency with Connect Care and Microsoft systems.


Preferred Qualifications:

Master of Nursing or a related healthcare field with 3–5 years of managerial experience, ideally in Maternity and/or Pediatrics. Change management training such as AIW (Alberta Improvement Way) or equivalent quality improvement methodologies (Lean, Six Sigma) is required. Minimum of 2 years in a similar leadership role in a complex organization. Experience using Connect Care and proficiency with financial and statistical applications to support operational and strategic decision-making.
