Your Opportunity:

This is a supervisory position responsible primarily for leadership, supervision, task allocation, and oversight within Community and Rural. The position is also heavily engaged in consultation and coordination with management, other Lead Hands / Sections, project staff, contractors, and numerous other stakeholders. The position reports to the Facilities Manager. The position oversees numerous frontline staff. The Lead Hand must have at least a 5th Class Power Engineers certificate along with a Journeyman tradesperson certified to perform work in an applicable trade, who possesses strong leadership abilities in addition to technical knowledge. The incumbent is considered part of the leadership team and will be expected to demonstrate leadership while effectively motivating staff to produce timely, quality work and to embody the AHS values of compassion, accountability, respect, excellence, and safety. The Lead Hand is expected to work independently within established guidelines and procedures and has the authority to take initiative within assigned areas of responsibility. This position will be required to work at other hospital sites including, but not limited to, Edmonton Zone (including rural). These sites include Alberta Hospital Edmonton, Sturgeon Community Hospital, Fort Saskatchewan Community Hospital, Strathcona Community Hospital/CASA, Northeast Community Health Centre, Leduc Community Hospital, Devon General Hospital, Westview Health Centre, Henwood, Food Production Centre and Central Production Facility. Possibility of rotating/extended shifts including weekends.

Description:

As a Lead Hand, you will be responsible for providing functional supervision to a moderately sized group of similar journeyperson trade staff. In addition to functional supervision, you will perform a wide variety of journeyperson level trade duties associated with maintaining, renovating, repairing and construction in accordance with AHS standards and practices. You will assign work of journeyperson and supervise staff and perform ongoing maintenance work in an area of assigned trade or related responsibility. In addition, you will provide health and safety training and orientation and ensure compliance.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited Journeyperson Certificate in trades from Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training.

Additional Required Qualifications:

High School education or equivalent along with a Journeyman Certification in a related discipline, and a minimum of Fifth Class Certificate in Power Engineering. Minimum of 2 - 5 years related experience in building operations in a leadership role and building maintenance experience (prior relevant experience may be credited towards minimum). Must possess relevant trade certificate in a field that is specific to the sites needs i.e., electrician, plumber, HVAC, millwright, etc. Must have proven leadership skills / abilities. Must be in good physical condition with the ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Must have ability to work on ladder with arms above shoulder height for long periods of time when required. No physical limitations with regards to sitting, bending, kneeling, crouching, etc. Must be able to complete repairs and installations with due consideration to patients, staff and visitors. Must have proven experience operating large, motorized equipment such as lifts, etc. Must possess basic computer skills, in addition to good, clear English communication skills both verbally and written. Possession of a valid Class 5 Driver’s License.

Preferred Qualifications:

Must be willing to upgrade education in a changing environment. Must be physically able to carry out duties (i.e., climb ladders, work in awkward positions, lift/move heavy material/equipment, work in hot/cold/dirty environments). Must be able to use required equipment/tools related to servicing of equipment. Must be able to maintain composure and make decisions in emergency situations. Must be able to prioritize workload and ensure duties are completed in a quick manner.
