Human Factors Specialist

The Human Factors Specialist for eSafety (the prevention of harm in the design, implementation and use of digital health technology) is part of a provincial eQuality and eSafety team that works collaboratively with the provincial Human Factors Program and together provide leadership in promoting best practices in digital health technology usability, patient safety and eSafety with digital health technologies. A successful candidate will have strong analytical, interpersonal, and collaboration skills, with a passion for usability and a creative eye for excellent design. A key role of the position is to support the health service delivery organizations in Alberta, in delivering in the area of patient safety, through the application of expertise in human factors/usability engineering. This is currently a work from home position that also requires on-site consultation and field work at sites throughout Alberta.

Master’s degree in a relevant discipline (e.g. Psychology, Ergonomics, Engineering, Computer Science, Information Design, User Experience/UX, Health Informatics). Combination of Bachelor’s degree, certification, or a minimum of 3 years of experience may be considered in lieu of a Master’s degree. Demonstrable human factors body of knowledge including concepts, processes, design principles and tools. In-depth knowledge of user-centered design methodologies including ethnographic studies, task and user analysis, heuristic evaluations, and usability testing. Ability to plan, prepare and conduct both formal and informal usability assessments. Experience building and maintaining collaborative relationships with team members. Excellent written and verbal communication skills including presentation and technical writing abilities. Strong analytical and problem solving abilities; detail-oriented, self-driven, fast learner. Demonstrable project management skills (setting and managing scope, tasks, team members, schedules). Ability to lead large provincial projects including planning and carrying out responsibilities with minimum supervision and prioritizing tasks and meeting deadlines. Can balance multiple projects at the same time.
Additional Required Qualifications:
Must be willing to travel throughout the province as needed. Must be comfortable working from home and also doing on-site consultation and field work at sites throughout Alberta.
Preferred Qualifications:
Understanding of the healthcare industry. Experience applying human factors industry standards. Understanding of academic research and publishing. Experience developing design concepts, work flows, information architectures, wireframes, etc. Client-management skills. Experience leading a large-scale human factors/usability project(s). Experience working in a fast paced, dynamic, and collaborative environment. Five or more years of experience is preferred.
