Health Care Aide
Your Opportunity:
As a Health Care Aide with the RAH Surgery Float Pool, you will provide patient care as an unregulated care provider under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN), Registered Psychiatric Nurse (RPN), or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). Working within an interprofessional collaborative care team, you will help meet each patient's physical and emotional needs and contribute to safe, high-quality, patient- and family-centred care. The Surgery Program cares for diverse adult patient populations, including orthopedic, plastic, thoracic, neurosurgery, trauma, general and bariatric surgery, urology, oral and maxillofacial surgery, ophthalmology, otolaryngology, and surgical observation patients. This position offers a supported pathway into surgical float work. You will begin by orienting to two surgical units and progressively expand your practice as your knowledge and confidence grow, with the expectation of eventually working across all nine RAH surgical units. In this role, you will: Provide compassionate assistance with hygiene, toileting, dressing, nutrition, comfort, recreation, and other activities of daily living. Support safe patient positioning, lifting, transferring, ambulation, and mobility in accordance with care plans and direction from regulated nursing staff. Obtain and document assigned measurements, including height and weight, and promptly report observations or changes in a patient's condition to the supervising nurse. Transport patients, specimens, equipment, and supplies safely throughout the hospital. Maintain unit supplies, equipment, and organized care environments to support timely patient care. Communicate respectfully with patients, families, and team members and contribute to coordinated patient care. Adapt effectively to changing priorities, fluctuating workloads, and different surgical unit environments.
Description:
As a Health Care Aide (HCA), you will work as a collaborative member of the multidisciplinary team, providing personal assistance by supporting activities of daily living and delivering support services to patients (clients, residents) who require short term assistance or ongoing support, in accordance with the patient care plan and facility policies and procedures. In this role, you will work closely with patients, families, and caregivers across the continuum of care in home, community, and health care facilities. You will assist nurses with the provision of routine care to meet patients' hygiene, nutrition, mobility, recreation, and safety needs; assist with organized activities or programs; and observe and report on patients' mood, health, and wellbeing. Working under the supervision of a regulated health professional, you will assist in maintaining a safe environment for patients, staff, and visitors, while supporting effective communication with patients and health care professionals. PLEASE NOTE: Until a new hire provides proof of HCA certification, they will be paid at the uncertified pay grade in accordance with the AUPE AUX Collective Agreement.

Active or eligible for registration or practice permit with the College of LPNs and HCAs of Alberta (CLHA) as a Health Care Aide, along with proof of education or completion of Health Care Aide Certificate within 18 months of hire.
Additional Required Qualifications:Current BLS-HCP completed within the last 12 months and issued by the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada. Basic computer and email skills. Strong spoken and written English communication skills. Effective organization, time-management, and prioritization skills. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within an interprofessional team. Ability to perform assigned duties independently while working collaboratively with team members and under the direction of regulated nursing staff. Ability to adapt quickly to changing workloads, priorities, and work conditions. Ability to safely meet the physical demands of the role, including prolonged standing and walking; frequent bending, twisting, lifting, and transferring; and lifting weights up to 25 kg. Ability and willingness to progressively develop the knowledge and confidence required to work across multiple surgical units.
Preferred Qualifications:Recent Health Care Aide experience or practicum in an acute inpatient unit. Recent experience supporting surgical or other high-acuity inpatient care. Experience working across more than one hospital unit or service area. Preference will be given to applicants with current or previous experience in the RAH Surgery Float Pool. Demonstrated interest in expanding surgical knowledge and progressively developing the ability to support all nine RAH surgical units.
