The University of Alberta Hospital is one of Canada’s leading clinical, research, and teaching hospitals, treating more than 700,000 patients annually from western and northern Canada. Our promise is “Extraordinary Care, Exceptional Caring.” This position contributes to the care of patients in the medicine program which consists of 14, 18+ bed units and includes many specialized services. The program utilizes a collaborative care model (COACT) including team nursing for patient care and Connect Care for the patient's electronic medical record. The program has a team of CNEs and CNS to support new hire orientation, training in specialized areas and ongoing professional development and initiatives. We strive to utilize evidence-based practice and quality improvement principles to improve patient and family experiences and outcomes.

Description:

As a Health Care Aide (HCA), you will work as a collaborative member of the multi-disciplinary team providing personal assistance including supporting activities of daily living and support services to patients (clients, residents) who require short-term assistance or ongoing support, in accordance with the patient care plan and facility policies and procedures. In this position you will work closely with patients, families, and caregivers spanning the continuum of care in home, community or health care facilities assisting nurses with the provision of routine care to meet patients' hygiene, nutrition, mobility, recreation and safety needs, assisting with organized activities or programs and observing and reporting on a patient's mood, health, and wellbeing. Working under a regulated health professional you will be assisting in the maintenance of a safe environment for patients, staff and visitors, and maintaining effective communication with patients and health professionals.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of Health Care Aide Certificate within 18 months of hire and active directory status on the Alberta Health Care Aide Directory. Must provide a confirmation letter as proof of enrolment from the Directory at https://www.albertahcadirectory.com/health-care-aides/confirmation/. Nursing students currently enrolled in an approved Alberta nursing program who have successfully completed a minimum of 100 hours of practicum; and are either in their 1st year of practical nursing program; or 2nd year of baccalaureate nursing or psychiatric nursing program will be considered. Must attest to this compliance and provide proof of qualification.

Additional Required Qualifications:

Must be able to work to full scope of practice (physically, mentally and emotionally) on this very busy fast paced unit. In this position, you will be on your feet for an extended period of time (both walking and standing), and you must be able to assist in transporting, lifting, and positioning of patients up to 50 lbs. You will also be required to bend, lift, push, and pull equipment. Criminal records check with vulnerable sector check for external applicants within the last 90 days. Proficient written and verbal communication skills required. Ability to work independently while working collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team. Ability to follow care plans and instructions from nurses or supervisors.

Connect Care training and experience preferred.
