Your Opportunity:

Working collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team of health care professionals, the Exercise Specialist (ES) is responsible for development of the exercise program for patients with or at risk for chronic conditions. This position involves exercise tolerance testing and measurement procedures for the purpose of development, implementation, evaluation and maintenance of the individualized exercise programs. As a member of the Alberta Healthy Living Program (AHLP) team the ES is involved in facilitating medically supervised exercise, client education, consultation, and evaluation. Under limited supervision, the ES will have a responsibility for ensuring patient safety through disease specific education and continuous monitoring of progressive exercise.

Description:

As an Exercise Specialist, you will be working collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team, delivering exercise assessment, training, rehabilitation, risk factor identification, exercise programs and self-management services for individuals and/or groups of patients within a designated portfolio. You will facilitate improvements using a patient-and family-centred model of practice where you will deliver ongoing patient education (in the form of individual, small or large classroom settings) to patients, family members, and other healthcare professionals as part of the rehabilitation plan. You will be involved with program delivery and client care, program planning, program promotion, and program evaluation.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of bachelor's degree in Kinesiology, Physical Education, Exercise Physiology, or equivalent exercise science degree. Active membership with the Canadian Society of Exercise Physiology, and Clinical Exercise Physiologist and/or American College of Sport Medicine, Exercise Specialist.

Additional Required Qualifications:

Minimum 1-2 years of exercise physiology experience within clinical setting in the areas of, exercise programming, goal setting and self-management. Minimum of 1-2 years exercise program design, testing and monitoring of patients with various chronic conditions (i.e., obesity, diabetes, hypertension, congestive obstructive pulmonary disease, heart disease, etc.). Advanced assessment and critical thinking skills in the area of exercise physiology, for example exercise tolerance testing and measurement procedures as it relates to chronic disease prevention and management for the purpose of development, implementation, evaluation and maintenance of the exercise programs. Demonstrates strong skills in adult education principles in a variety of settings including individual counselling, group visits, class setting and public presentations.

Preferred Qualifications:

Ability to work independently in a rapidly changing work environment required. Consistently demonstrates excellent written and verbal communication skills.
