Your Opportunity:

This is an opportunity to build something new. Assisted Living Alberta (ALA) is seeking an exceptional public-sector finance leader who can ensure today’s reporting obligations are delivered with accuracy and credibility, while helping shape what the function becomes tomorrow. The Executive Director, Finance will become a trusted advisor to senior leadership, a credible partner to the Ministry and Office of the Auditor General, and a champion for the finance team. This role will lead the design and implementation of a new financial reporting operating model and translate the future-state vision into practical processes, accountabilities, governance structures, resource requirements, and capabilities. This position is eligible to work remotely in Calgary or Edmonton and is ideal if you are as interested in people and possibilities as you are in numbers. Assisted Living Alberta provides Albertans with the support they need through a comprehensive assisted living system that offers a full range of services, including medical and non-medical supports, continuing care homes, home care, community care, and social services. ALA is focused on delivering care more effectively and consistently across the province by enhancing home and community services, expediting access to supportive living environments and continuing care homes, and ensuring Albertans and their caregivers are well-informed.

Description:

The Executive Director, Finance (ED) is the senior leader responsible for Assisted Living Alberta’s (ALA’s) finance function. Reporting to the Chief Administrative and Finance Officer, the ED provides strategic and operational leadership, expert advice, and ensures accurate, timely financial reporting and compliance with reporting obligations. The ED provides senior technical leadership on complex accounting matters, financial statements, disclosures, estimates, unusual transactions, and the application of Public Sector Accounting Standards (PSAS). Responsibilities include overseeing the preparation and review of financial statements, ministry submissions, and monthly, quarterly, and year-end reporting. The ED leads the design and implementation of ALA’s Financial Reporting Operating Model, translating government requirements into effective reporting processes, governance structures, and accountability frameworks. This role is also responsible for organizational risk management. The ED builds strong relationships with key internal and external stakeholders, including government ministry representatives, the Auditor General, senior executives, and operational leaders. This role works across organizational boundaries where ALA is accountable for reporting outcomes but relies on external organizations for source information or transaction processing. The ED leads nearly 50 high-performing team members and fosters accountability, quality, collaboration, responsiveness, professional judgment, and technical excellence.
